I'm a newbie and need help on picking resmed or dreamstation please!

Post by YawnGone » Fri Dec 27, 2019 1:14 pm

Hi all, I'm new here and need advice. Long and short of it: I got my first cpap last week, a PR dreamstation. Seems to work well enough and is easy enough to use. But I have seen so much feedback online saying that Resmed AS 10 is superior. My DME gave me until Monday to switch to Resmed if I want. Can some folks give me a layman's terms/newbie level explanation of why they prefer one or the other. I only have until Monday to decide

Resmed auto machines (the AutoSet and Autoset For Her) are much more responsive to breathing events, this video is on the previous generation machines from both mfgrs, but the algorithms are the same and the response to breathing events is the same:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzCCgNLya_g

Resmeds are a little quieter, they come with a better travel bag, they provide more detailed data, they hold a more water (only 50ml, but more is more). they're engineered and built better, you don't have to change the filters as often.

That's what I've got off the top of my head. Dreamstation Auto machines DO have a couple of advantages... the 12volt cord for battery use use is cheaper, and the machine is cheaper (so more profit for your DME). that's about it.

I own both a dreamstation APAP and a resmed autoset for her. I much prefer the resmed algorithm over the dreamstation. It is quicker to respond, and the breathing feels more natural to me. As with all thing’s CPAP YMMV.

My Humble Opinion:
  • ResMed data is presented better in OSCAR
  • ResMed has a better algorithm and does a better job of responding to event precursors
  • ResMed's Soft Response
  • ResMed has larger humidifier tank
  • ResMed has a much better second hand available
  • You constantly hear from those who have used both both stating they prefer the feel of their ResMed, rarely do you hear about people preferring Respironics.
  • ResMed's are typically more expensive, if they were of equal quality, one would expect a lot more Respironics.
  • ResMed's EPR gives better relief than Respironics *flex. EPR's CM measurement is more intuitive.
  • Chicks dig guys who use the ResMed Airsense 10 for Her
  • ResMed's patented OverShoot Technology

I'm using a Dreamstation Go APAP.
There are two key things I don't like about it, that the Resmed seems to do well from the comments I read.

1. The Dreamstation pressure relief algorithm is feels really weird (for me at least) to breath with. I need some relief to get the pressure high enough to reduce flow limitations. The Dreamstation's CFlex relief works well on flow limits and I can verify that on OSCAR, but it causes small pre inhales as it recovers to IPAP before you inhale again. AFlex was even weirder for me, and I couldn't get used to it at all, it would keep me awake.
2. It's pretty slow to respond to events, and doesn't seem to recognise or respond to flow limits at all. I see long series of flat tops and valleys on my inhale flow graph all the time and the Dreamstation does nothing until they turn into H and As.

As a result, I'm now using a sophisticated machine as a dumb straight CPAP, set higher than I need, with the lowest pressure relief setting.

It would seem that Resmed would win hands down for someone with a higher RDI, and who requires pressure relief.

resmed saved me. i haven't used a dreamstation, but i have used a resperonics product.

because i am very susceptible to aerophagia, i couldn't tolerate the increments on resperonics, which increase by .5. the resmed increments are .2. while still took me a long time to raise my minimum from 7 to current 15.4, at least with resmed, i could DO IT!

so, yeah another vote for the airsense.

I am only a week in but I have the DreamStation. My full face mask is much more comfortable than I imagined and I like the tube coming from the top instead of my now like an elephant.
I think the ramp (starting low pressure of 5) works well for me and helps me go to sleep easier. Since I’ve started my therapy I have began having no apneas and less and less hyponeas. It’s working well for me. Better than I expected. I have no experience with ResMed.

Yeah I used two respironics system one machines over 10 years. The Resmed S10 Vauto is a damn machine of elegance! You can't hear it, at all! It's probably half the size of the equivalent respironics. I can make it through an entire night and NOT have to get up to fill up the water chamber. It is just better in every way.

Ergonomics are way ahead of the system one machine. You also get a big color display (both of my system one machines were black and white and one didnt have a backlight!). No backlight, what is this, the 1980s gameboy! Real care, time, and attention went into making the S10 line. Can't say the same for the System One line.

Newbie too—one month in on a ResMed Airsense 10 Auto. Now that I’ve gotten the settings dialed in thanks to this forum and my doc’s PA, I really like it, especially after getting the EPR set to 3 and response to “soft”. I looked at both devices, but because of my small-ish nightstand, I chose the ResMed for its much smaller footprint. Easy to use, feels well made, and reminds me a little bit of a Sony Dream machine alarm clock I had in the 80s (this is a good thing—back when I always slept well and bounced out of bed rarin’ to go). Best of all, it is very quiet—have to concentrate to hear it and yes my hearing is still quite good

I started with a S9 (ResMed). When it came time for a new machine, I was dispensed a DreamStation. There were a number of things I liked about the DS over my old machine.

That said, it felt like the DS was fighting with my breathing. Getting rid of smart ramp (or whatever it was called) helped, My DME confirmed it was operating properly. But it still felt very unnatural.

After seven days (and a few posts and responses here), I swapped the DS for the AC 10. Couldn't be happier!

My first five years of PAP therapy, I was using the Respironics. I had a difficult time sleeping through the night with it. I found that it was too noisy for me as well as I felt that I was being forced to breathe along with the machine. So when I woke up at night I wasn't able to fall back asleep.

This past January, I was able to switch to the ResMed, because the month before I was given the opportunity to have an overnight sleep study to see which algorithm worked best for me. The sleep study showed that I did much better with the ResMed.

I am so glad that I was switched to the ResMed - the few things that I have noticed in this past year

- my overall AHI has been reduced to an average of .42 - my average using the Respironics was around 4 to 5, but I had nights where my AHI spiked up to 10 or more . . .

- I feel like I no longer am fighting with breathing with the PAP - the ResMed follows my breathing pattern so it is much easier to sleep with.

- With the Respironics, I felt like I heard the breathing with the PAP, so it was very loud to me. With the ResMed, I find that I hardly hear my breathing, and sometimes I wonder if the ResMed is On or Not, because it is so quiet and more gentle for me.

My vote is for ResMed. I am so grateful I had the opportunity to switch :)

I did a lot of research and had decided I wanted a Dreamstation for a variety of reasons. My sleep doc found a DME who would dispense one for me.

The day I went in, he fitted me with the mask I wanted and the Dreamstation. He gently queried me as to why I had selected the Dreamstation and said most of my reasons were actually answered by the Resmed Airsense 10 Autoset as well, even though they were not explicitly stated and went on to tell me about the third algorithm the For Her model had. He asked if I would like to try that machine as well. I was there so I said sure, why not. I had found the Dreamstation to be quiet. The Resmed machine was SILENT! I chose Resmed and have been very pleased. That little bit of extra noise would make a big difference in the middle of the night!

I used a ResMed S9 for five years. Was eligible for a new machine so thought I would try the Dreamstation. Used it for two weeks and never did get comfortable with it. My nightly readings were all over the place. Finally I took it back and got the ResMed A10 Autoset. MUCH quieter and I immediately felt comfortable with it. It obviously handles events different than the Dreamsatation.
Kinda funny because I had a Respironics System One machine I used as a backup and when camping in our trailer and was very comfortable using it.
