12mm tubing with machines other than dreamstation go

Post by Mikkik1 » Tue Dec 10, 2019 10:55 pm

I use an Aircurve 10S set at pressures of 10/4. I also purchased a dreamstation go for travel. I recently started using a dreamwear ffm with my bipap machine and used the 12mm tubing, I have been sleeping great with AHI between .1-.4
When I tried to order additional cushions and 12 mm tubing, the site stated that the 12mm tubing could only be used with the dreamstation go. My question is can I actually use the tubing with my aircurve 10S. It’s so light and flexible that it’s been great but I don’t want to screw up my sleep therapy or the machine. Any feedback would be appreciated

There's a reason we have hose diameter choices on our machines....it's kinda important so that the machine can adequately deliver the proper pressure.

I don't know just how much of a problem you might get into with using the 12 mm hose with a 15 mm (otherwise known as slimline) hose diameter choice. There's not much difference there but there is a difference.

Hmm, why does this sound soooo familiar.

Slimline is 15 mm compared to the 12 mm used by Dreamstation Go. This means the cross sectional area of the tubing is 56% larger on the slimline tubing meaning the air has to travel 56% faster through the Dreamstation Go tubing. I don't know how that would affect the pressure loss calculation exactly(its complicated) but in short the machine would be providing you with less pressure then it believes it is, how significant that difference is I am not sure.

This hose selection would affect some of the data calculated by the machine but I don't believe it should affect AHI calculation so it probably can provide satisfactory treatment you just have to fly a little blind and don't believe the pressure etc data that may be affected. Personally I would use tubing the machine is built to work with because the effect is unknown.

One way to get an idea of whether or not the difference is obvious is to have everything hooked up to the Dreamstation Go and assuming you can change the hose setting during operation you could change it to 15 mm tube while wearing the mask and see if there is any obvious difference. If you wanted to get scientific you could use a pressure gauge and see how much the pressure changes.

Setting the DSG to 12mm while using a 15mm hose, or vice-versa, is very obvious (and educational). The 12mm hose has a surprising amount of resistance. Try sticking the hose in your mouth, without the machine attached, and try breathing deeply. It’s like breathing through a straw.

The pressure drop is proportional to the flow. At zero flow, the pressure in the mask is the same as the pressure in the machine. As the flow rate increases though, the mask pressure can be significantly lower than the machine pressure.

The machine knows the flow rate and source pressure. IF the hose type and mask type are set correctly, the machine also knows how to calculate the pressure drop and compensate.

For example, if your pressure is set to 13 and the total drop is 4 cmH2O (tube and mask) at peak flow, the machine knows it has to provide 17 for you to receive 13 while inhaling. As inhalation slows and stops, the machine pressure drops until it matches the mask pressure. Exhalation requires similar compensation.

Of course, the vents complicate that calculation.
