Full Face Mask: Strike Three?

Post by af » Mon Dec 11, 2006 6:41 pm

Hi Everyone....I have tried the following FF masks: Comfortfull 2 (leaked from sides), F&P 432 (large size leaked from bottom), Hybrid (sealable but develops leaks quickly). I guess my face is longer and narrower than most. My nose mask is ok when I use Chin-Up strips, but sooner or later I will get that really bad cold. Are the Mirage FF and F&P 431 any different from the above, or is there anything else out there?

The Ultra Mirage Full Face mask is definitely different. I could never get a seal with the 431 without overtightening the straps, but I could with the UMFF. It's my favorite full face mask (and the only one I use now). It's many people's favorite.

Hope that helps.

Machine: M-Series Auto
Mask: Headrest
No humidifier
On the hose since 2005.

Before you spend any more money you might want to try the Hybrid with the F&P's headgear.
I'm not sure if the 432 headgear is the same as the 431's but when I put my 431"s headgear on the hybrid it made all the difference in the world.
I did not like the UMFF and the comfortfull chewed my nose up.
The F&P 431 was my mask of choice until the Hybrid came out.

I tell ya I'm not wasting any more money on a mask until Somnotech comes out with their Yara hopefully later this month as I'm told.

I want and prefer a full face mask also, but my therapy was going down hill and I suspected it was due to too many leaks from my UMFF. I find the FF mask does a better job at keeping me uncongested I also like how the footprint feels compared to nasal. I haven't had a cold or flu in several years (now watch me get sick!!).

I'm hoping to buy one of those Somnotech Yara's as my Christmas present if it ever becomes available.

Once you use their nasal version and find it doesn't leak at all (not very many masks I can say that with), you have to wonder about their FF version of the same thing.

Only thing different on the FF that I can see is it is bigger to cover the mouth and has an entrainment safety valve. But it has the same exhaust port as the Soyala which means it will probably be dead silent, similar headgear which I find to be great. It has all the makings of an excellent mask. You might send an email to cpap@cpap.com and ask when they expect it to arrive. I was told by Somnotech the US distributor (barring any problems) it would be available before the end of the year, that is not too far away as it sits now.

I'd buy the nasal version and tape before buying anything else (and did, been using it about a month now, best mask I 've used since being on cpap over 5 yrs now).

I hope this doesn't ruin your Christmas, Snoredog- but the Customer Service dept. at Somnotech told me today that the "Yara" (or whatever it will be called here) won't be available until "early 2007"

I'll be waiting too.

Interesting thing about head colds. I seem to do better with my nasal pillow interface, than my full-face mask most of the time, when I have a cold. Why? I'm not sure. Maybe the treatment air tends to keep the nasal passages open, and the FF mask allows the nasal passages to close because breathing is through the mouth..

Here is what I do, when a head cold attacks:

1) One half hour before bedtime, I rinse my nasal/sinus passages with Sinu-Rinse.

2) Blow nose as needed.

3) Put on ChapStick.

4) Tape mouth with 2" Micropore tape.

5) Increase humidifier setting to level 2 (with the FF mask I use it passover with heated hose on).

6) Lube nares with a bit of Bag Balm.

7) Install CL2, and go to sleep.

I may wake in the AM with one side congested, but rarely both.
I'm sure this will not work with a major cold. However, its working this week.

+ Aussie heated hose.

Just thought I'd mention that I'm with College Girl for the Ultra Mirage FF. For me, I had to get a cpap tube wrap to prevent rainout and whistling from the exhaust port but otherwise, it's great.
