Asking for help/suggestions re: noise issue......

Post by CPAP Torturee » Fri Oct 25, 2019 2:59 pm

I’m a newbie here but not a CPAP rookie, have been mostly struggling with it for five years. I had two years of a silent machine and finally found a mask I could live with, the P10. My first machine, a Dreamstation, had the whistling issues i described in my first post. That plus bad mask advice from a DME really hindered my acclimation. My second machine, an Airsense Autoset 10, was perfect for two years and I was getting about 7 hours of good sleep.

After two years, it developed a noise which would start between 4 and 6 AM. I go lights out about 11:45. The room cools during the night. The noise is sometimes a whooshing noise, sometimes a pinging/whooshing noise. The noises last only about a second and are irregular, occurring sometimes a few minutes apart, sometimes 10 or 15 minutes apart. They might go on for an hour, then quit for an hour, then begin again. By then my sleep is blown up completely.

So, two months ago I sent the machine back to Resmed asking for warranty repair or replacement. I sent along a thumb drive with an MP3 recording of about 10 occurrences of the noises. (I no longer have that recording). At that time I bought a new identical machine. It has made the same noises since the first night, every night. I went to the seller and told him this and he informed me Resmed had changed suppliers of motor bearings and was flooded with returned machines. He said initially they were replacing them, and now they are repairing them. I am unsure if that is my problem or not.

I have moved machines to every height, including under the bed. I have used hoses from 6 to 14 feet in length, custom making lengths with food-grade shrink tubes and a heat gun. I have replaced all humidifier tank parts numerous times. I am now using the 6’ Resmed ClimateLine heated tube and the 18” P10 short tube only. I have tried Auto setting and a number of manual tube temp and humidifier combinations. There is a gentle slope in the tubing down to the machine. The tube is taut with no dips for about 5’.

I have put acoustic sound panels all around the machine. Nothing changes the pattern, with the noises starting at 4-6AM. They are loud enough to wake me even with earplugs and a loud white noise machine between me and the A10. I also have a through-wall A/C unit which makes a soft noise. The temp in the room was around a constant 74 when the problem began about 6 months ago. Then I lowered the temp to 70 during summer. Recently, it starts at about 70 and cools to mid 60s during the night.

I’m about out of ideas. This has been a real setback for me. Any ideas or suggestions, even seemingly insignificant will be HUGELY appreciated, including suggestions to buy a different brand machine. It’s hard to find help with CPAP. I’ve been muddling through and this is my first contact with other users. Thanks for anything and everything.

Thank you. I would think I was crazy except for a few things: I have recorded the noises; i can mostly mask them with ear plugs and loud white noise; and, I have a Dreamstation which I do not like for various reasons, but which does not make loud noises. Thanks again.
