Wheezing/whistling problem....solution.....

Post by CPAP Torturee » Thu Oct 24, 2019 3:22 pm

I’m new here, so, hi, fellow sufferers. I’ve been on CPAP for five years, had a terrible first two with a wheezing Dreamstation, then bought a Resmed Auto 10 and became acclimated to CPAP. Then after about six months it began the same wheezing/whistling sounds on inhale/exhale that seem to travel up the hose. I have seen others complain of the same problem dozens of times on all the CPAP forums.

I have discovered the fix which works on both my machines. If this is already well-known, please forgive me; I have not seen it posted and am trying to help those who might not know how to fix it.

The solution is the commonly available personal lubricant which is water-based and “edible”, and, therefore, I assume safe for this use. Remember, I’m a newbie so please don’t laugh at me.

On the Resmed machine, there are two doughnut gaskets inside the machine to which the water tank couples (nice word choice here, huh?). There is also the gasket between the tank upper and lower halves. With your finger, spread a very light coat of the lubricant (think the abbreviation for the horse-race state) on all surfaces of the three gaskets. I have done this on two wheezing Auto 10s with immediate and lasting results. From wheezing/whistling to silence.

On the Dreamstation, there is an oval doughnut gasket in the humidifier chamber. You can remove it and lubricate all contact surfaces. There is also the large, flat gasket in the top of the chamber. Do likewise with this one as well. This was an immediate fix on my Dreamstation and had to be repeated after about six months.

I sincerely hope this helps somebody. Soon I will ask for help for a noise problem on both my A 10 machines. One has been at Resmed for two months, the other is two months old, but that will be a new thread. Best of luck to all.

Fine, but have you voided your warranty?

Who could possibly care? I can’t get one repaired under warranty anyway. It’s been at Resmed for over two months. They won’t even talk about it.

It’s my first day here. I thought maybe you shouldn’t pump (haha) any brand names.

You know, I don’t want to step on any toes here on my first day, but if you can’t sleep because of the whistling noise, I say break out the KY, and to heck with the warranty. And if Resmed or PR voided your warranty for lubing their sorry gaskets, to heck with them as well. I was just hoping to help somebody who had not discovered this fix yet.

Sounds more like "maintenance" not "warranty voiding" to me... *shrugs*.

As usual PR felt the need to criticize someone with a little comment in a relatively harmless note... sorry I'm not intimately familiar with how your financial system works re machines... why not just ignore what I said = - not as if I'm leading newbies astray!

I just never heard of a little KY voiding anybody’s warranty.

As soon as you quit doing that, I'll quit commenting on what you say.

" . . . wheezing/whistling sounds . . . "
My machine is nearly five years old, and no sounds like those.
Is there something unusual in your cleaning regimen?
Has your machine been exposed to any corrosive gases, like ozone, chlorine, or smog?

This board and other boards have a tremendous number of complaints describing this same problem. My second A 10 was two years old before the whistling started. I'm a SoClean user, but the whistling started way before the SoClean purchase, when I was doing the soapy water regimen with an organic, fragrance-free dish soap. Corrosive gases? Maybe I should lighten up on the wife's chili.

A search for "whistling" gets 1600 hits on this board.

It's an occasional, but infrequent, issue, considering how many of those machines are out there.
Ozone (which the soclean uses) is a very corrosive gas, We've has people who disassembled their Air 10 machines and found the foam inside all crumbling, and getting blown into the humidifier and hose.

All the teasing aside (you DID set yourself up for it at first) It's good that you identified a likely culprit, I'll keep it in mind for when the wheezing/whistling complaint comes up again.
