Why

Post by Batty1 » Wed Oct 09, 2019 5:02 am

Can anyone please tell me why my tongue, gums and surrounding area go numb while using the Cpap and how to fix it? I loosen the mask but that hasn't helped at all and I don't get any sort of numbness when Im sleeping without the machine.

Update: I was wearing the Simplus but had to stop due to air leaks near eyes and switched back to dream wear full face mask and recently my sleep doctor dropped my air pressure from 7 to 6 to stop the numbness which we thought was from being dried out even though I use the humidifier.

Thanks

Is it really numb or just very dry ?
The position of the tongue stuck to the upper palate is important and not that easy. You can train it and to me this helped the most to the drying out of my mouth.

Hi, Its really numb not dry since water doesn't correct it and it takes a bit for the numbness to actually subside once I remove the mask....it feels just like your your foot does when it falls asleep.

I can't figure it out other then my mask is pushing on a nerve around my mouth if that's possible.

The mask should ride LIGHTLY on the face, where air pressure fills the mask;
and the mask rests gently on the skin.
If you need to tighten it down, it is the wrong size/wrong mask.

Could this possibly be a manifestation of "Sleep Paralysis?" You can google that term.

I don't feel as if it's too tight I don't have facial marks should I loosen the mask once it's filled with air? I'm a side sleep if this matters.

If I may make a suggestion, try going to YouTube and looking for mask fitting videos for your mask type.

Good luck!

Zonker, as usual, makes an excellent suggestion. All I might add is . . .

Some masks (and at times the tendency not to move as freely when using a mask) can for some tend to exacerbate TMJ issues.

More rarely, numbness in the face/mouth area can relate to very early indications of oncoming trigeminal neuralgia problems, which can be brought on for some by something very lightly touching, or brushing across, the face.

It is also remotely possible that the good effects of PAP therapy are making a drug you take (glaucoma drug, seizure drug, etc.) more effective but with more of a side effect, which might require retitration of that drug.

I would not ignore that particular symptom. I would mention it to professionals, myself. Unexplained numbness in the facial/oral area is always worth exploring independently of the use of CPAP, especially if numbness is seemingly stronger on one side.
