Mask making noise but machine shows 100% fit
Mask making noise but machine shows 100% fit
Hello! I’ve been using CPAP for three or four weeks now, and I’m still getting used to it. Last night, my husband said the mask was making so much noise with escaping air that he went to sleep on the couch. The machine shows it was at 100% fit for all night though. It’s actually shown 100% since I started using it. I use the Dreamwear nasal cushion. I’d appreciate any advice on what might be going wrong or how to investigate this. Thank you!

Re: Mask making noise but machine shows 100% fit
Masks all vent air in some fashion or other and the DreamWear has 2 places for it to vent. Top where the hose attaches and another at the nasal cushion.
Vented air can be noisy and a lot depends on the pressures used. More pressure equals more vent noise.
Also vented air can bounce off bed pillows, headboards, covers, arms, whatever....and this also will create some noise.
The DreamWear mask has nothing to diffuse the air to reduce the noise.
There are masks out there that have a diffused venting system so that the chances of vent noise is greatly reduced. Respironics doesn't have them though. ResMed or F & P have some.
The one that I used to use was the ResMed AirFit P10 nasal pillow mask. It only has one area for venting and the holes are diffused so that you can't feel the vented air unless your hand is about an inch from the holes....and it's pretty much silent.
I don't know that you are doing anything wrong or if there is anything you can do. I don't know if hubby is simply hearing the vented air noise or if the air is bouncing off something which amplifies the noise.
If you like the hose attaching at the top ResMed has a similar connection with the N30i and P30i. They are supposed to be more quiet in terms of vented air but I haven't tried either one to verify it.

I don't hear a thing on my P30i.
When I tried the N30i, I did hear some front venting, it's venting is slightly different than the P30i. The P30i has venting holes with a diffusing material as well, the N30i, just holes.

If hubby has a problem with the noise and you don't, it sounds like he has a problem being very supportive. You can get background noise or nature sounds, I used to use a fan as a masking noise, not for cpap noise. Jim

I have never seen anything but 100% mask fit reported by the Dreamstation or DreamMapper. I guess that is partly because leaks usually wake me up. PR must set the bar REALLY low though.

You need to look at Oscar to see what the night was actually like, the display on the machine tries to sum up the whole night into a single number, and that loses a LOT of meaning.
Get OSCAR
Accounts to put on the foe list: dataq1, clownbell, gearchange, lynninnj, mper!?, DreamDiver, Geer1, almostadoctor, sleepgeek, ajack, stom, mogy, D.H., They often post misleading, timewasting stuff.

Re: Mask making noise but machine shows 100% fit
What specifically should I be looking at in the Oscar data?

That’s good to know! The top-connecting hose quickly became a must-have for me, so I’ll look into trying one of those.Dog Slobber wrote: ↑Tue Oct 08, 2019 8:30 amI don't hear a thing on my P30i.

He’s so conscious of not making me feel awkward about it that he at first wouldn’t tell me why he slept on the couch! I had to ask him point-blank if it was the cpap. We do run a fan for white noise at night, so that’s what makes me think this was extra-loud/unusual. It’s been fine on other nights. (I think? Neither of us had noticed anything in the previous weeks at least.)

Re: Mask making noise but machine shows 100% fit
I’ve been wondering about this. One of my first nights using the cpap, I woke up up because the seal broke and was blowing air in my eyes. Still showed 100% fit in the morning though!ragtopcircus wrote: ↑Tue Oct 08, 2019 10:30 amI have never seen anything but 100% mask fit reported by the Dreamstation or DreamMapper. Re: Mask making noise but machine shows 100% fit
it would be easier if you were to take a screenshot from your oscar charts and post them here. the experts can take a look at the events you are having and give you some feedback to help you out.Rem949 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 08, 2019 3:09 pmWhat specifically should I be looking at in the Oscar data?
oscar has a lot of detail. it's way too complicated for me to interpret. so i just let the boys and girls here look at charts then do as they suggest.
good luck!
