Should a person who fails CPAP/APAP (by pulling off mask at night) buy an ASV to try out as a last resort?

Why would you think that you wouldn't pull the mask off at night using an ASV?

tape the mask on until you quit pulling it off.

I believe the point would be to prevent opportunities for pulling the mask off......

in what way?

btw, you'd do best if you started your own thread.
people say i'm self absorbed.

vs preventing pulling the mask off?

Your entire night is an "opportunity" to pull the mask off.

I went from fixed pressure CPAP to ASV after I changed to a new sleep doc that correctly diagnosed me with mild central sleep apnea. (I paid for the new machine) My issues with aerophagia went away completely and I felt much more comfortable on ASV. Also, my AHI went to zero. I still have issues taking the mask off when I wake up at 2am due to sleep maintenance insomnia and have a hard time going back to sleep. Still trying to fix that.

I was prescribed an APAP as my AHI numbers were good on it (2-3/hr); however, I still felt awful. I found a used ASV on Craigslist, and bought it with my own money. Wow, what a difference! I can actually live again and my AHI numbers are typically 0-0.7AHI.

It is my belief that there is far more to sleep science than AHI as it is still relatively new. Sadly, many of the docs only use AHI as the sole indicator.
