How low does your heart rate get while sleeping?

Post by icipher » Mon Aug 12, 2019 1:43 pm

I, like probably many of you, have a low heart rate(bradycardia). At rest during the day I can be as low as 55, but go much lower at night.

They recorded a low of 42 bpm at my sleep study. I record my heart rate at night and it typically falls to 40, and has even hit 39. I am a moderately overweight 35 year old that is otherwise healthy, but certainly not a trained athlete.

Does anyone else see BPM this low or lower? Anyone had problems with rates this low?

My father has a similar low heart rate (Bradycardia) normal resting during the days is low 40s, and sleeping will drop as low as 35 or 36. He had an issue while taking a blood pressure medicine, and the cardiologist took him off the BP meds. Blood pressure would drop to as low as a recorded 110/56 and along with Bradycardia it was a bad combination. My father is pretty incredibly healthy having walked the AP trail 5 years ago and walks 2-3 miles each day. Having what was revealed as some anxiety attacks during the night and the feeling he wasn't breathing properly with an O2 Sat level of 82. Off the blood pressure medicines and he is doing fine with modestly high blood pressure in the range of 140/70.

So while it's not an exact match to your situation, I would certainly speak with a cardiologist.

Good luck, and I hope you get things figured out.

I'm 34 and have low HR as well. Originally I had tachycardia then they started me on synthroid for underactive thyroid and now my HR is low. I've seen mine as low as 48 while working (standing all the time) and lowest while sleeping has been about 39. Typically my low while sleeping is mid 40's and I am not an athlete either. My Dr doesn't seem to care but I'll ask in person about it at next appt in a couple weeks.
I just had blood work and TSH was 2 so we'll within normal.

You could also ask your Dr to check your thyroid. I think there is some evidence linking thyroid issues with sleep apnea.

Mine will be in the 40's when sleeping. Usually upper 40's but occasionally in the low 40's. Never realized it might be a problem.

I have AFib, and had bypass surgery last Nov., and am on a number of heart drugs, my HR runs in the low 40s most of the time, but can range up over 50 for short bursts.

Checked my HR monitor and saw that I went down to 36 BPM about 4 hours after going to sleep. wow.

Like others in the thread, I'm routinely down in the 40-42 BPM range overnight and I've measured as low as 36 BPM on the occasional overnights where I've used my CMS PulseOx to monitor O2 levels. My regular resting HR is in the mid-60's typically.

In visiting with my doc about it, I have no ill-effects from the bradycardia, so we're not taking any measures to address it. If I had issues with low blood pressure or dizziness/lightheadedness, we'd look at treatment options.

From what I just read, 40's can be normal for a lot of people.

You really need to see a cardiologist. There are a lot of fingers that potentially could be pushing in on this balloon and without seeing the whole picture nobody is going be able to say why the balloon is poking out elsewhere. This isn't all that uncommon, but it does reduce the margin of error with everything else other doctors may be presenting. If you are on medications, if there are other health factors involved, you really just need to start with a cardiologist.

It's always a good question to discuss with your doctor, but you may find this article helpful: https://ouraring.com/heart-rate-while-sleeping/

I don't have the oura ring, but my Apple Watch shows that my heart rate is in the low 40's during the night. I think that's pretty normal for me, doesn't concern me.
