What are currently the best FFM options for side sleepers?

Post by alexander » Fri Aug 09, 2019 4:32 am

I know choice of masks are subjective and all, but still —

I’ve got AirFit F20, and today I got the AirTouch F20 cushion. I haven’t tried it for a whole night, but I tried it for 15 minutes or so, and I like it so far except that I feel that it would work better sleeping on my back. Still, it’s probably three times as comfortable as the AirFit F20 silicon cushion – I hope it lasts!

I wonder if any of you have any suggestions for FFM masks for sleeping on the side. I’m especially curious about recent masks such as AirFit F30 and DreamWear. Would these masks be more comfortable for side sleeping than AirTouch F20? How come that there is no AirTouch-like cushion for F30?

I used the Mirage Quattro for many years and now I am using the F&P Simplus....I never had problems sleeping on my side.

If you sleep on your side a lot, most all full face masks will be the same. Is your pillow interfering with your mask? If so, stick with the mask that is comfortable and doesn’t leak, and look at the pillow side of your sleeping. As you stated, pillows preference is the same as masks. I use a CPAP memory foam pillow (Contour Pillow) and a lot of folks use a buckwheat pillow, tho it’s too hard for me. These pillows offer low interference to the mask when you are sleeping on your side.

I don’t think I’ll find a better mask than the one I currently have then. I have tried a few CPAP pillows earlier, but I prefer a normal memory foam pillow. I guess my therapy is optimized enough for now. :)

I like the dreamwear FFM. I have the hose come up from behind pillow so the hose is out of the way and the dreamwear has had the air come through frame of mask so if you sleep on either side the air can still get through and the face part itself is mostly soft and comfortable. I sleep on back, sides, and stomach and have been able to sleep comfortably in all positions.

Oh and I use memory foam pillows.

I side sleep most of the night with the AirTouch f20. I added a pad-a-cheek anti-leak strap and it stays put very well. It has made a huge improvement in my treatment.

That pairing has was a huge improvement for me over the Amara view and Quattro Air.

Do you use the pad-a-cheek cover for the AirTouch F20 cushion as well? I understand that the durability of those cushions are not at the same level as for the silicon cushions. Would like to make it last a bit longer.

Do you notice any pain on the side of the face once the straps are filled with air? I’m currently solving the hose management issue by using a stand.

No pain, they collapse. It comes with cushions for straps too but I don't use them.

I don't.

Replacement cushions on Amazon are about $30. ResMed suggests that they be replaced monthly and that they not be washed. I replace the cushion no more than monthly -- how much longer than a month mostly depends on how gross they get.

I have not tried washing them (a few on this board report doing so with good results).

I side sleep the 2nd half of the night using F30 without issue. Also used to have Dreamwear Full, side slept fine with it as well but the air in the tube next to my ear and hand acting as a megaphone, is very loud.
Yay :D For no more diaphragm cramps and dozing off while driving!

My wife saw an add for the Dreamwear full face mask and recommended it to me because of the lack of a forehead pressure point. I want to give it a try. I am seeing positive recomendations in the newsfeed. Anyone else have
any comments about it?

I need to quantify something here I only just realized and maybe I'm unique, regarding side sleeping, my face and mask are never in direct contact with the pillow because I support my face with my left hand, I'm primarily a left side sleeper. Upon waking just a moment ago I noticed this and did a quick experiment putting the side of my face directly into the pillow and yes it did seem prone to pushing the mask aside and causing a leak. So there you go, my side sleep data is compromised haha.

On the Dreamwear Full, I just donated to a friend but it is a quality mask, which for me was just OK, it's very light and comfortable and maybe only real pressure point if too tight would be against the septum. The top of head hose works well and I never felt it digging into my pillow and annoying me, works pretty well. Getting a good seal can be a little testy but not aggravating like some others.

My ONLY issue is related to my earlier mentioned cradling my face in my hand when side sleeping with the Dreamwear is the deafening roar of the air in the tube right next to my ear, ofcourse magnified by my hand. Nonetheless I was still able to sleep through the night with it, go figure.
Yay :D For no more diaphragm cramps and dozing off while driving!
