Since data is now "The world’s most valuable resource[...]", as evidenced by CPAP machine manufacturers expending the extra effort to design, engineer and manufacture the capability in their machines, and then contract wireless carriers to provide the connectivity, as well as cloud-services to process and store it, we can conclude that it must be a valuable asset to someone. The question is, shouldn't we be getting something in return? :) Just like Amazon subsidizes their devices with "Special Offers", or free apps with ads, businesses have long attempted to entice users by giving them discounts in exchange for seeing ads and/or getting their personal data in exchange for some value, in return. While the argument going on in this thread focuses on what's being collected, by whom, and whether it's perfectly legal or not, maybe the real question should be whether we, the CPAP users, who were charged an already solid amount for our machines, should probably demand a discount on those prices, if we're expected to also freely provide the data that manufacturers put such great effort to forcefully collect (as opposed to users just taking the data cards to their doctor)?

Since ResMed, and likely other PAP manufacturers are using in support of their R&D, we stand to get better machines with better software and better adjustment algorithms as it all evolves.

For what the anonymized data consists of -and- what that data costs me to produce (both trivial and inconsequential to me), I'm *absolutely* willing to make that "more than reasonable" trade. I see no reason to cut off my nose to spite my face, regarding this issue.

But, opinions will vary...

On a similar notion, I am outraged that I am expected to pay high prices for my cellphone service,
and am not given features to block anonymous calls.
My old phone did that. This one does not.
I would also like to block any and all spoofed calls.
I suspect it is possible--and I am sure I am entitled to at least that much.

Yes.

So often, many here comment about preferences, advantages, superiority ... of ResMed's algorithm. Without much thought about how the developed it, nor how they might improve it.

If anyone needs more detailed pictures to disable the modem, I have a whole series of pics of how to dissemble an Airsense 10.

It's quite easy to do.

PM me if you want access to my pics...

Nope didn't forget at all.

While giving access to his pics might help a person or two, it's really not a good way to help the community.

A brand new topic, with the pics and some good searchable text, creating a permanent record on the forums is how to benefit the community.

You're not representing accurately all that's going on in this topic.

ie:
  • While it's agreed that ResMed IS uploading data, there is NO evidence that ResMed has anything beyond the machine serial number. (unless one volunteers and supplies said personal information via providing it via MyAir
  • Some are making false claims about CPAP manufacturers being in violation of HIPAA. They are not. HIPAA does not apply to device manufacturers.
  • Some are making false claims that their data is being shared without their knowledge. Many are being informed, but it's within the forums they signed, agreed to, but didn't read. It's also in the the ResMed user guide. The ResMed 10 screen provides an icon that all or most should be familiar with, wireless signal strength bars.
  • ResMed provides a method, airplane mode to prevent transmission.
If you want to be vigilant about asserting your rights to privacy then by all means do do. But you should be equally vigilante about ensuring others are being truthful and accurate about theses alleged violations.
Actually, HIPAA DOES apply to manufacturers, it applies to any person or organization that collects, stores, uses, or distributes medical information.
What forms are YOU referring to? As stated before, I NEVER signed ANY form. And both PRIOR to and AFTER receiving the device I made it know to ALL parties they were NOT authorized to collect, store, use or distribute ANY of my information.
...
Do you have any on-topic/USEFUL information for this forum/thread?
Or are you just a troll from ResMed's PR department trying to squelch objections to their unlawful practices?

HIPAA absolutely does not apply to device manufactures nor any person or organization that collects, stores, uses, or distributes medical information.

HIPPA defines Covered Entities as:

Health Care Providers:
  • Doctors
  • Clinics
  • Psychologists
  • Dentists
  • Chiropractors
  • Nursing Homes
  • Pharmacies
Health Plans:
  • Health insurance companies
  • HMOs
  • Company health plans
  • Government programs
Health Care Clearing Houses

That's defined within HIPAA, you can actually look it up at HHS.gov, to verify for yourself. But I'm guessing you won't as you've already had lots of time to do it, preferring instead to make crap up, and call people trolls.

https://www.hhs.gov/hipaa/for-professio ... index.html

Go ahead. Educate yourself.

HIPAA does NOT apply to Device Manufacturers.
