[slightly OT] Help a sleep medicine pioneer

Post by prodigyplace » Sun Jun 30, 2019 5:56 am

Apparently one of the experts, Dr. Christian Guilleminault is suffering medically.
I found this on the SleepyHead FB group.

I am so sorry for anyone in the doctor's position, but I find it very hard to understand why, of all people, he would need to be funded vs e.g. so many others who are in far worse positions financially (unless there's some unusual circumstance there) who can't even afford ER visits for their children when necessary. Am I missing something?

I think this comment sums it up best.
To honor and show appreciation to a truly great scientist who has contributed so much to our field.
Perhaps to research, learn, & honor those we benefit from? I had never heard of him before.

A quote from the GoFundMe story for Dr. Guilleminault-
"At Dr. Guilleminault’s request, funds raised will be forwarded to his charity of choice, the American Sleep Apnea Association (ASAA)."

This quote could have been in the original comment.
My original thought was "Why would a renown scientist not have decent health insurance?"
Then I realized that is true of 99% of us.

Health care is a right, not a luxury! If his coverage is inadequate, then this exposes a much larger problem.

I wish him well.

First you would need a Skill, then you would need to know how to put it to work. Jim

A quote from the GoFundMe story for Dr. Guilleminault-
"At Dr. Guilleminault’s request, funds raised will be forwarded to his charity of choice, the American Sleep Apnea Association (ASAA)."
Dr. Guilleminault isn't asking for money for himself- he is requesting for all the funds that are raised to be given to the American Sleep Apnea Association - Also, most likely a group of friends who want to honor him that are the initiators of the fund raising on behalf of Dr. Guilleminault

Again:
"funds raised will be forwarded to his charity of choice, the American Sleep Apnea Association (ASAA)."
Does everyone finally understand?
The man has devoted his life, his brain, his energy to help people.
In his final days he wishes any memorials be directed to the same objective.

The sarcasm does not appear to be aimed at the doctor - it looks to be aimed at a comment from another member here. I think everyone understands the doctor’s position.

Perhaps I overestimated the maturity and goodness of the people here.
(Old man rant)
In my day we were taught to be polite and thankful.
( Old man rant off)

People today seem to be neither thankful nor mature. I had hoped posting this would provide more information on the history of our treatment and a chance to thank a pioneer who so going through a rough time right now

How wrong I was!

As a Older Man, in my day people with Money didn't beg for Money on the Internet, or anywhere else, except for Crooks and a few Evangelists. Many people have lived their lives, working a job and doing it well, for the good of all, without notoriety or much monetary reward. Some even enjoyed it, besides basic needs that was enough. When you can't enjoy it anymore, it's time for a change, It sounds to me like the Go Fund Me Idea, is more like the son's idea.... Jim

Maybe him Deeding his house and money to his Favorite cause would be appropriate.
