How much water in the humidifier tank?

Post by BamaGramma » Mon Jun 24, 2019 8:32 pm

I've been using the CPAP for a little less than a week and I've dumped more distilled water down the drain than I like. I fill the tank to the max level each night and it's barely below that the next morning. My DME told me to fill it nightly and dump it in the morning. I'm wondering though if I need to put that much water in it each night. Is that MAX line just a suggestion?

Thanks in advance for your advice. I have to call the DME tomorrow but don't want to bug them about water when I have a much larger complaint about not being called back. The frame to my head gear is too big and I don't feel like I always get a good fit with the mask. I called about it on Friday and have yet to hear back. Fit is so important.

Be very suspicious of anything your DME tells you.

It's a limit, not a suggestion.

You don't have to use distilled water, but if you don't, then I do suggest dumping the water every day to cut down on mineral bulidup.

If you do use distilled, many people just top up the humidifier, and don't dump it more than weekly.

MAX is just maximum. You don't have to fill it all of the way, especially if you know you won't run out. Running out during the night can be unpleasant.
Emptying and drying out every day to a subject that people have various opinions about. Since you're new to the exciting world of CPAPs, you can follow the DME's instructions until you get tired of it and just top off and occasionally clean as I do
(If I were immunocompromised I might worry more about it.)

hey, bama! you'll find that a majority of us on the forum are cheap so 'n' so's. so it just KILLS me to think that i'm paying good money for distilled water, then just dumping it down the drain.

so, i don't do that.

and i don't obsessively clean the tank, wither. if i see scum in there, i'll clean it out. but not on any rigid schedule.

you'll do fine just topping it up.

Thank you all! I've already learned so much from scouting this forum (like how to fend off the multitude of suggestions that I get a So Clean because otherwise I'll get horribly sick!) Our water here has a good amount of minerals in it, so I kinda like the idea of using distilled water (80 cents a gallon at Walmart) but I'm a cheap so and so too and don't want to dump any more of it than necessary.

I NEVER dump what isn't used. I check it daily, and refill if it gets below about half. NO problem at all.

I usually only fill-it halfway when I am using the humidifier as I usually set it for low humidity. I empty the water on plants.

If you are using so little water, do you even need to use the humidifier?

You might try turning the humidifier off and not putting in any water. If your nasal passages get dry, then return to using the humidifier.

BTW, there are a good many of us that don't use a humidifier.

How much water you use is dependent on many factors. These factors include, your pressure setting, which mask you're using, the temperature and humidity in the room, and the idiosyncrasies of your breathing. It is also very dependent on how high you set the humidity.

I really don't think it's a good practice to leave water in the tank during the day, so maybe put less water in the tank each night.
