Has anyone else had these experiences with these masks

Post by LikwidFlux » Sun Dec 03, 2006 2:02 pm

Alright so, because my insurance allows me to order multiple masks (and since I'm an EPO I don't pay anything) I wanted to get some advice.

Here are a list of masks I have, and some comments. Does anyone have any suggestions given what works and doesn't work for me?

ComforGel - Amazing, but I wake up with dry mouth sometimes so I am trying to get used to a full face mask.

Ultra Mirage II - OUCH, the silicone HURTS, I sweat and the rubber sticks to my face.

Comfort Curve - Ok mask, but it's too narrow so it squeeze my cheeks a little, and even running the hose under the blankets and using a heated humidifier it hurts (from the cold)

FlexiFit 431HC - Trying to get used to it, woken up twice now and put on my ComfortGel. It seems to leak A LOT under my chin, and I'll wake up with my machine beeping at me that I've taken it off, when really it's just leaking too much.

I've put in an order for the Swift, and I'll probably call tomorrow and order the Hybrid. Does anyone have something that might help? I don't want to tape or use a chin strap but I may have to if I can't find a mask that is my perfect fit.

Thanks for the help all!

i am using the swift nasal pillow and i love it!!! I really cant help with input on any other masks since this is my first and only one ive tried. I used the swift nasal pillow during my titration study and liked it from the beginning. I have only been on cpap for 2 weeks and havent really tried any other maks

I am a swift user. I do have to tape but feel I would with any nasal system.
I really love the swift.

I just got a hybrid last week, so I am not too experienced yet with that one. Don't know if I will be. we will see if I can stick it out and get the proper adjustment.

Biggest problem I have is the nose pillows. They really push up on my nose, and if I put them down a notch into the mask I don't get the angle i need to seal them.

May just be my inexperience, but either way it seems like a bit of work to get it working. I have read that those who do get it right love it.

Right now the insides of my nose hurt. Never happened with the swift. Irritated to the point I want to sneeze and nose if running. Probably since I used the small nose things. I just couldn't get medium to seal. Well, back to the medium next time.

When I had it on and it sealed right (ignoring the excessive pressure on my nose) it seemed pretty good. Other thing I don't like so far is that chin flap. Really makes me sweat, and I can guess that the person who posed about rashes my be telling me what will happen if I go all night with the Hybird. I can see how that would provide stability though, but if you are sweating into it.....

I may try to put some cotton material in that thing, and worset case, do what others have done and cut it off.

Since I have my swift, I am going slowly with the hybrid when the mood strikes.

Ultra Mirage FF mask. I have two of those (different sizes). OK, used for sleep study. Ok for a ff mask, but leakage when I move the muscles in my cheeks. I am a fidgeter and that may be my problem. I also don't like the low straps that the ff masks (including the hybrid) seem to have. Seems like it is putting pressure on my neck. I keep this one for colds, although if I could get the hybrid working better that might be better for a cold for me.

I have also tried the comfort curve, on me it kept riding up to my eyes so it was a no go.
I would like to some of those that didn't work for you as I have tried several others. The swift did not work for me as I sleep on my stomach and it also has a somewhat large exhalation port that to me is very noisy. i tried the comfort lite 2 nasal and direct seal and they didn't sit tight enough for me, I tried the comfortfull 2 and although it seals well it is very heavy and bulky for me.
So far the only mask that works for me is the breeze nasal interface I love it most of the time but I am still in search for a full face that will work or a direct seal that will work........If you side sleep, stomach sleep or roll alot the breeze is great good luck

Hi LikwidFlux,

I am a big fan of the Swift (and looking forward to try the Swift II when available in North America).

The Swift is my fourth mask and to me it's the best so far.

Prior to the Swift I used:

Comfort Gel: Leaves a long lasting red spot on the bridge of my nose;

F&P 431; Leaves the same red spot plus marks on my cheeks;

Comfort Light 2 with pillow interface: Comfortable, no marks, but keeps moving around (despite the fixes), giving me only a few hours sleep.

Regards,

David

I owned all those listed at one time except for the 431, they are all in my dud drawer.

They got replaced by this one:

it is more comfortable
it leaks less
it is quieter

been using it every night since 11/6/06, it has since replaced the UMFF as my favorite. looks conventional, but it works, best swivel elbow on any interface I've tried.

You seem to have a good supplier for masks. The reason the ComfortGel gives you dry mouth is you are a mouthbreather.

You don't want to tape, and chin-straps for the most part are useless. That leaves FF Masks. I'm sure, you will be able to find something wrong with everyone of them.

You, are going to have to correct the problems, if you are going to get the needed treatment. No-one makes a perfect mask for us all, we have to adapt the mask to our needs, and accept a few problems that crop up.

I'm a 431 user and hope I can help.

First of all, make sure the insert is firmly seated in the mask. If not, it may leak between the two.

Second, you might try the next size smaller insert. In my experience, leaking under the chin means the insert is too large.

Third, hang in there! It takes a while to get these things adjusted.

still very new at this, but after trying a Comfort Gel at my sleep study, and the comfort Lite II medium and small, I've found best results with the small pillows - I am so excited, I've slept 2 nights all the way through!!! I am so grateful to this board for all the info - I'm still learning, but lots of great info here! thanks to all, and I hope you'll find the right mask - I understand that's the hardest thing to find. I used to have problems with dry mouth pre machine- but with the machine now my mouth stays closed.

I'll toss my two cents in . . .

I am new to CPAP therapy and have been working to find a dependable interface. Thank goodness my DME is a friend and has been getting the vendor reps to comp the masks for long-term trials. (But couldn't get the APAP for free. ) To date I have tried the ComfortGel, ComfortCurve, and Mirage Swift.

I liked the ComfortGel, but it left a red imprint around my nose; even though it wasn't cinched down tight. I do like that the pressure isn't puffing out the nostrils, as I worry about physiological changes from the long-term use of other interfaces that pump the pressure directly into the nostrils; although, as you’ll see below, I like them best.

The Swift irritated the exterior of my nose. It may have been because I was congested (irritating my nose with tissue), so I am going to give it another try in a few weeks. I know several folks who LOVE this interface.

The interface I have been using comfortably for the past week is the ComfortCurve. It squeezed tight for the first few days, but has seemed to relax with continued use. I really like that it doesn't go in the nose. It helped to place the headgear so that it pulls straight back behind the ears; instead of upward as recommended by the RT at my DME. Even though I, so far, like the ComfortCurve, I have had to make some pillow modifications to keep it from getting pushed around, as I toss, and leaking; had to do the same the few days I used the ComfortGel.

Unless the mask causes pain or serious marking, I have been told it takes a few weeks to really decide if you can live with it. From what I have gathered from reading this board, finding the "right" interface is the biggest issue to getting comfotable with CPAP. This seems to be one issue that is VERY personal. I wish you all the luck in your search!

FYI - As it may have some effect on the performance of a mask, I am running my APAP with a minimum pressure of 12 and Maximum of 16; c-flex at 3. Mouth breathing has not been an issue; no tape, strap, etc.

Sleep Well!!
