Smargie’s Therapy Thread...in Need of ASV Advice
Re: Mouth breathing
Thanks, Pugsy. Could you also point me towards info about using quotes, please? I’ve only been able to figure out how to quote another poster’s entire post...I’d like to know how to zero in on just the part I’d like to respond to.

Re: Mouth breathing
You can either use the full quote feature that you already know about or do selected snippet quotes.
Using the full quote thing opens you up to messing up more easily though and why sometimes the quotes get whacky. People edit the wrong area and starting typing in the wrong area and you get a mess.
I prefer to do the snippet thing and to do that all you do is open up a blank reply box and then scroll down to the part you want to address or quote...then highlight it...then while highlighted click on the quote button.
Then I end up with this. It's what I do often because number one I hate to see big huge blocks of a long post copied in its entirely...waste of space IMHO...and I don't always know what someone is actually replying to or as an answer to a specific question....or even who they are talking to.
As in when I am only replying to one question when maybe several were made.
When replying to the OP and not many replies have been made I may not even use the quote feature because I just don't see the need. I figure most people with any smidgen of common sense will understand who and what I am referring to.
and people can use the preview button to see if their post looks like they want it to look but remember to click submit as final step or it won't show up

OK, I think I've got it! It seems to me that you need to be on a laptop or computer to do this, though. I'm usually on my iPad and I haven't found a way to highlight passages on it. Sleepyhead has made me use my laptop a lot more, but since I'm not using cpap now (or ASV yet), I've switched back to the iPad. Anyway, thanks for your help.

Ahhh.....yes, being on a PC makes doing the snippet thing easier.
I haven't yet mastered it on my iPad Pro.
I do my best composing and editing with a mouse...though I think my new mouse is supposed to be compatible with my iPad but I haven't yet figured out how to get it done. I hate using the keyboard on the iPad Pro so I avoid it as much as possible and when at home I stick with the PC.

Ooh I didn't realize you could do this. I just did it from my iPhone.

Re: Mouth breathing
and, thanks to pugsy, you did it! yeah, i'm not good with calling it a "rule". i just think it makes things much easier for folks here to comment on your situation when you have all your info in one post. of course, after you've been here "awhile", then you can certainly start posting individual threads.Smargie wrote: ↑Sun May 19, 2019 7:27 am
Zonker, I've been thinking about starting a new thread since the topic has strayed so far from the title, but I was trying to follow the 3 month rule. It didn't occur to me that I could just change the name. Thanks, I'll do that! (Provided I can figure out how)

Re: Smargie’s Therapy Thread
The only "rule" around here is "there are no rules".
There are some generally accepted norms just to make things flow easier or helping easier...but in reality there are no rules beyond some plain old common sense rules that sometimes even those go flying out the window.

Re: Smargie’s Therapy Thread
It's good to know that there are no hard and fast rules, though I do always try to poke around a website like this first to learn as much as I can and avoid being too redundant. I did actually try to find instructions for using quotes, but didn't find anything. I agree that copying entire posts is unnecessary and can make things unwieldy and confusing. Maybe instructions on how to quote just snippets could be included under info for newbies. Babydinosnoreless learned this technique by reading this thread:
There could be more people out there who don't know how to do this than you'd think.

I usually hit the quote button, then delete everything except what I'm responding to.

Re: Mouth breathing
Yes, I've done it that way too, but sometimes it's a LOT to delete. I guess it's the only way possible if you don't have mouse, though, so it's good to know how to do it that way too.

I am using my iPad at the moment. It's "easy" to highlight text and do almost anything you can do on a laptop. No card reader or USB ports, so has it's limitations there, but if you want to send me a private message about it, rather than make this a discussion about iPads, maybe I can help you?

Re: Smargie’s Therapy Thread
Hi everyone! I was just contacted by my Sleep Center. I called last Thursday as it had been almost 2 weeks since my study, and was told my doc was out of town so she hadn’t read it yet. I told them she’d said she’d have a colleague read it, so they gave it to a different doc. His recommendation is a bipap ASV. That’s all the info I got.
So...am I correct that Respironics makes one of these and ResMed makes a few? I will look for threads that debate the merits of each, but in the meantime do any of you have a preference you can share, or if not, could you please steer me towards any convos you know of on here or any articles? I plan to go to the DME much more prepared this time. I was happy with the Respironics dream station they gave me...it’s nice and quiet and has some nifty options, but the machine used at the study was also a Respironics and I hated it. I know the hospital machines are different, but I just want to make sure I do as much homework as I can before selecting my new one.

Re: Smargie’s Therapy Thread
Respironics makes the DreamStation ASV
https://www.usa.philips.com/healthcare/ ... ion-system
ResMed makes more than a few bilevels and they do have the equivalent ASV in the AirCurve 10 model line
https://www.resmed.com/us/en/healthcare ... 0-asv.html
The term "bipap" is a Respironics marketing term which encompasses several different models of machines that do various different things in bilevel pressures.
ASV is but one of several bilevel machines...it's a model.
The term "bipap" has sort of got to be used as a generic catch all name for all bilevel model machines (doing the various things some of them do) but I prefer to use "bilevel" myself. Avoids confusion about model brands or model names.
There are many models that are bilevel pressure delivering machines....ASV is more auto adjusting than some of the others and is probably better suited to treated obstructive as well as central apnea..
It will auto adjust as needed for the obstructive stuff and auto breathe for you if you have a central apnea.
Having actually tried both ASV brands (but not in the latest models)....I prefer ResMed. It's less noisy...less chance of the Darth Vadar noises and more of a set it and forget it kind of machine. It's fairly automatic.
Respironics has more customizable settings available which may be good and may be not so good.
There are pros and cons with either but after actually using both brands....ResMed is my preference in the ASV models.
Someone once compared them to 2 automobiles....one a sports car (ResMed) and the other a nice Cadillac (Respironics) and both will get you to where you want to go. Some like fast and forget it and some like slower with more things to fiddle with to get you there.
