What happened to Sullivan

Post by resprob » Sun Nov 26, 2006 12:35 am

John D,

Sullivan was an Australian company which is now ResMed. I think they are based in San Diego, CA

Respironics

John D,

Respironics is based in Murraysville, PA just east of Pittsburg and has been producing CPAP/Bipap units for over 30 years M series is one of the top 3 in my opinion.

Agreed!

I can def agree there, this machine is a dream. Now that the leaky humidifier has been fixed, I have no reservations about this machine.

So ResMed bought out Sullivan. Thanks for that info. I would not have bought a ResMed machine unless I would have been allowed to have the data card and reader. To me, that is one of the reasons I am feeling so much better now....the ability to see my sleep data every day and adjust the pressures accordingly and to take a hands-on approach to my own sleep-health! Also, the price increase to the general public would have made buying one prohibitive, as I had to pay for it myself.

Frankly, I don't understand that type of business practice in this day and age of the Internet. It seems to me that they are going to loose a lot of business that way. They lost mine.

I assure you...I am just a converted cpap customer....

Post by JohnD » Sun Nov 26, 2006 4:21 am

HI Dsm,

I have been on cpap for over 13 years now and recently bought a Respironcis M series auto to replace my old Sullivan cpap. I could not be happier with the machine. All that aside, the fact that ResMed is selling their machines at a much higher price than Respironics was one of the factors that prevented me from buying their machine. My insurance has a high deductable, so I had to pay for the machine myself, price was a factor for me. Couple that with what I have read about ResMed raising internet prices and also not selling the software and card reader makes me wonder what they are doing and why. I have read some of the explanations as to why they went this route....maybe those explanations are not factual?

What do you think the reason is for ResMed's higher prices and refusal to not sell their software and card reader?

Thanks, John D

some information...

Post by JohnD » Sun Nov 26, 2006 2:14 pm

Dsm,

Sorry to sidetrack this thread, but you mention "dishonest" remarks....I am only basing my information on posts that I have read here on cpaptalk.com and had no intention for them to be taken as "dishonest"....example.......

viewtopic.php?t=13796 .......this thread seems to have some information directly from ResMed. As to whether or not resellers and the like are following those rules I do not know. It seems that you are suggesting they are not and the software/readers are available.

https://www.cpap.com/productpage/resmed ... -card.html

and

https://www.cpap.com/productpage/resmed ... -cpap.html

...these 2 products from ResMed are now not being sold, at least on cpap.com. When I saw that, it seemed to me that the policy outlined in the first url above was indeed true. If it's not, then I apologize. It seems strange that ResMed would have a policy like this, but then as you say, the software and card readers are still available?

You make no mention of the main reason I bought Respironics......the cost factor. Also, this inability to not be able to purchase the card reader and software card on cpap.com would have made my decision to not buy ResMed products, a very easy one.

In any case, as I said before, I am very happy with what I have. For example, last night, I had an AHI of 0.7 for the first time in about 3 weeks. I was able to do this because I could see my sleep stats on the Encore Pro software, and JSkinners great software, and I was able to tailor my min/max pressure accordingly. Also, the advice on this forum from many folks was very helpful. If I did not have this software, I certainly would not have been able to do this so easily, and would have had to have several visits by a DME to arrive at the correct pressure etc. For me, having a hands on approach to my own sleep care is fantastic and a definite must.

JohnD thanks for your considered response. I won't add any more as this is Tricia's thread and is about old cpaps.

Cheers

I was given an old machine by an uncle. A Bipap ST. Any idea how old this thing is? Should I change?

Insurance doesn't cover it in my country so I would need to spend a lot of $$$ for an "upgrade".

If the machine is even one of the big square Bipaps, they still work and work well. If anything, these are early examples of Respironics manufacturing quality (very good).

If it is the S/T & not the S/T 30 then I believe it will not have the AUTO-TRAK feature so leaks need to be kept under control but that is no big deal.

If you need advice on setting it up, pls ask.

This has been rather interesting for me. I had expected to see a few more out there using older xpaps, nonetheless it is always interesting to see all the unexpected directions a thread can go....

I would like to respond to a few of you here with the following:

tooly125: Have you picked a name for your new bed partner yet?

dsm: Thanks for the link to those cool pics, great collection!

elliejose: I am so sorry that it did not work for you back then but am glad that things are getting better now. The help we find here is priceless!

DreamStalker: You are correct, that is a german outlet plug and yes, the pressure is measured in millibars (I am set at 11). WOW! I had no idea that in the states you are using a different measurement for the pressure. Please tell me what that is... much here would make more sense had I known this and it could help me from talking 'rubbish,' due to my ignorance of the difference. I would greatly appreciate this information, I feel a need to respond to another posting and this is essential therefor. Thanks.

Sleepless in St. Louis: WOW! Does that bring back childhood memories! I used to put my little brother on that and take him for the wildest rides throughout the house on 'piggy.' That old metal case vac sure was fun! (yes folks, they used to be made of metal and NOT plastic, imagine that!)

rested gal: Maybe I'll take 'Charles' to the Olympics.... and yes, that is my cpap-pro on the left bottom photo.

The 'free trip to Australia' was... interesting. However the incident prior to that saddened me greatly. That someone here could not resist the opportunity to lash out at another so viciously... how sad. Sometimes it is better to say nothing and walk away....

Wishing all of you the best...
Tricia
