I have had occasion to use melatonin, but do so in tiny amts (cut-up 3 mg pills) and still find a slight hangover effect if I don't take them early enough or if a particular Apap nite isn't perfect... but I feel they're probably safer than 'drugs' of any kind and they do a good job. I don't want to be knocked out in any case, or worry about crossover effects, just sleep a bit faster and a bit longer on the nights I want to. And if there really is a placebo effect, that's fine, whatever works :D !

This just dropped into my mailbox:

Interesting. I currently use no aids, but have tried melatonin. It worked for a night or two, then not. Wait a week then maybe,or not. I just tough it out. I know if I will just persevere, sleep will come. My biggest problem is going back to sleep when I wake in the middle of of the night.
Has anyone tried Calms Forte'. Did not do much for me. Maybe it takes repeated doses over time?
Anyway, still interesting article.

Waking up at 3-4 AM and not being able to fall back asleep was my main problem. For a while I would take a Benadryl and fall back for an hour or two. A recent visit to my doctor got me to try a slow release Melatonin. He said Benadryl was oK occasionally but not good for seniors.

I have tried benadryl alone and with aleve. Just makes me feel crappy not sleepy. It used to, but for some reason not anymore. Probably because I stopped drinking. :) Except a few beers on Saturday night(just to be honest). Love that beer. Oh well, nevermore. Did not know there was slow release Melatonin? WalMart?

LSAT, do you think this has made a significant difference for you?

This is also a big issue for me. My Doc suggested L-Theanine at bedtime or after waking up, but I'm not sure it's made any real difference.

With melatonin there was a large study that said less, when it comes to dosage, is more effective. The recommended dosage from the study was 300 micrograms. Way less than most over the counter melatonin. I found a 300mcg extended-release melatonin on Amazon and I find it works great.

Thanks raisedfist. I see lots of 300 mcg 6-hour time release options with a quick search. Going to seek out some locally today and give it a try.

When my Doc recommended L-theanine, she wasn't in favor of using melatonin, and I didn't pursue why at the time..but will next time I see her. Regardless, I'm going to try it, gotta improve on these 4-5 hour sleep nights I've been having.
