Constant Flu like symptons?

Post by Sunnyboy » Fri Mar 15, 2019 9:49 pm

Hi all,

Long time lerking, first time poster. I used the search feature but couldn't find a similar topic, not to say there isn't one I just didn't come across it in my search...

I have been using CPAP for one year, pressure of 8.0 on the Resmed Airsense 10 Auto. I normally use tap water, and recently did a check-up with a specialist and everything was all good (although I'm $380 AUD down from the 'specialist')

I am having difficulty trying to figure out why I constantly caught, and have clear fluid coming up, often requiring antibiotics, before clearing up and starting the entire process all over again. My tube temp is between 25-27 degrees 'C' depending on the weather in Sydney (recently 25 degree average this week, next week about 30-32 degree average) and I am using the Nasal Pillow P10 with a AHI of 1.1

I suspect it may be silent GERD, because somedays it's fine, and others it affects me all day everyday, and has been for the past week and a half... Stuffy nose, constantly needing to clear throat, can't breath deep without wheezling

A recent doctor appointment seen me referred for chest x-rays and a blood test (done about 1.5 months ago for the same type of symptoms) but nothing really came out of it, nothing substancial to give a definite cause, was placed on anti-biotics and it cleared it up, but back at stage one again

Any suggestions on what may be causing this constant infection type sickness in my lungs?

First and foremost, thank you for taking the time to read and reply to my question. I have recently moved properties, and there is two large open doors, and a sea breeze as I live about 60 seconds away from Sydney Harbour, it is hot here, as mentioned 25 degree - 32 degree celsius average, so it's not the cool air that is causing the common flu, there is more than enough warm air that what I cannot work out..

If you're getting plenty of outside air, then that's probably not it, but something like a misadjusted gas cooker, or water heater could cause excessive CO emissions... so even though it's towards the end of summer down there, I thought it worth mentioning.

I appreciate the out of the box thinking, that is what I was looking for but I can confirm from two different properties now, I am having the same issue so I thought it may be related to the tap-water, or the CPAP machine.

I bought a SoClean 2 just to make sure, but still even that I have no idea if it'll fix the issue..

You may have caught a infection from watching the No Clean Ad's on T. V. They make Brains drip out of the noses after watching the scare ad's. Jim

If it is two different properties wouldn't it also be two different water sources ?

If the water is safe to drink, it's safe to use in the cpap.

Correct, even still... I've recently been using the filtered water from the large 15L bottles the wife uses as drinking water, still haven't felt much of a difference...

Allergies may be the most likely cause.
Exposure to new materials/pollens, etc. can trigger unknown allergies.
It is cheap and easy to try an OTC antihistamine.
Check with your doctor first--just in case.
Symptoms of cancer may look like the flu in some cases.

I will go back to the doctor with the results of the new x-ray and blood tests, I will take it up with him about the OTC antihistamine, re:cancer it's possible of course, but a chest x-ray two months ago, and another about a year ago when I had borderline pneumonia should have shed some light...

I have autoimmune issues so I clean my mask more than most here. I dump my humidifier water in the morning and let the tank dry out until night when I fill it up again. I wash my mask cushion with warm water and dish soap every few days. The nights I don't wash it I wipe it down with rubbing alcohol to kill any germs. I change the filter about once a month or sooner if it looks dirty (I am in Arizona and we get a lot of dust). So far (keeping fingers crossed) I haven't had any problems with getting sick. If anything I think its helped a little bit breathing filtered air at night.

I'd like to also point out I am currently recovering from a knee reconstruction, meaning for the past two months I havent been able to do too much. Sitting around on the couch is the norm...

Have you tried lowering your humidity setting (or even turning it off - especially considering that you're in a humid atmosphere being next to the water? Too much will result in constant congestion, leakage, etc. giving you a 'cold'. It's not a mandatory part of treatment, only a comfort feature for those who need it... I rarely do as I'm also relatively near water and the climate's humid, tho' in winter, with central heating on, it can dry out so I may need some.

I wish you had led with that . . .
It might make a difference.
