Finished Home Study w/ prescription for CPAP- What to expect next?

Post by sedanblue33 » Sat Mar 09, 2019 8:13 pm

Hi everyone! First time poster, so I apologize if I have asked previous questions. I have searched through the discussion board, but figured it was time to post for myself. Very new to this and still learning a lot!

I am 26 and recently finished my Home Study. My primary care physician has written a prescription for a CPAP machine due to severe sleep apnea. I am working through my insurance Cigna (CareCentrix) and was told that I will be also working with local DME in Kansas City, MO for my CPAP machine and titration appointment. When selecting a machine, do they give me options on what I can choose from or am I pretty much at mercy with the insurance on what they deem is necessary? I hope to get an APAP and I am close to meeting my deductible. I just want to make sure I can get the best machine possible and the proper equipment due to meeting deductible. I am not sure what to expect next or what machines I should choose. Leaning towards getting AirSense 10 CPAP. Any help or tips are appreciated. Thanks!

You don't want the AirSense 10 CPAP, it's a brick. No detail data, constant pressure.

Get the AirSense 10 AutoSet or the AirSense 10 AutoSet for Her. Preferably the for Her model.
Battery Backup: EcoFlow Delta 2

My DME is in a different state. They didn’t let me choose, but, good thing, it is a good machine and mask.

Not everyone is so lucky, people need to insist on getting a full auto full data machine, they're paying for it, they have to use it.

The Airsense 10 CPAP the OP mentioned is a crap machine, they should refuse it.

The code for Cpap for most insce. co's is the same as for Apaps, so tell the DME you need an Apap and don't let them tell you it's more expensive... it'll give you many more options for therapy than plain Cpap and Apaps also can be run as Cpap if necessary.

This is all true, and good advice.

sedanblue33, let me add some perspective on this...

You are 26. That means you only have around 100 years left to live, if you take care of yourself. You are now at a crossroads.

One path involves throwing yourself at the mercy of the insurance company and taking whatever they offer you, then making do the best you can.

The other path involves taking charge of your health right now. Do your research and find a machine that gives you all the features and flexibility and allows you to view your data on a breath by breath basis. This allows you to dial in and optimize your therapy with the goal of having excellent sleep.

With path 2 you can try arguing with the insurance company and sometimes come up with a good compromise. Or you can go outside insurance and buy a machine with your own funds. Now the question changes a little... How much is your health worth?

An example is this...

viewtopic/t175038/Almost-NewAirsense-10 ... -Sale.html

As yourself... Is my health worth $415?

Remember, you are in this for the long haul. Decide wisely.
