Newly diagnosed and machine questions.
Newly diagnosed and machine questions.
I completed my sleep study last week and got my results yesterday. On the prescription the doctors wrote
"CPAP : 7Cm H2O with efficacy and EVENT TRACKING.
Machine : Patients choice, to include a water chamber. NO EXCEPTIONS"
Can someone explain what my options for are and the best choices for a machine? I have seen people talk about being sure to get the reamed auto etc... But with this Rx I want to be sure I am using the best option. Any input is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Re: Newly diagnosed and machine questions.
I agree that you should get an "automatic." You can set the min at 7 (your prescription) and the max somewhat higher.
They'll tell you you can't adjust the pressure yourself and/or it's illegal to do so, but neither are true!
Make sure your machine is an automatic,is the current model, and supports a heated hose.
The two largest manufactures are ResMed and Respironics, but I've had Fisher & Paykel CPAPs in the past and they were fine.

Re: Newly diagnosed and machine questions.
this may be of some help:
https://maskarrayed.wordpress.com/what- ... me-part-i/
You ideally want a machine that will work with sleepyhead software so you can somewhat track the efficacy of your treatment. The ResMed AutoSet for Her has an extra algorithm which is very nice to have and I have seen someone say - nice to have it and be able to try it or use it, than not have the option at all.
My DME lied to me and said the AutoSet for Her has only a difference in appearance. So just warning you that your DME may lie to you too.

sometimes in order to succeed it just takes one more try. and a lot of frustration along the way.
Re: Newly diagnosed and machine questions.
Here's a list of machines: wiki/index.php/CPAP_models
You absolutely have to have "full data" and preferably an automatic, and preferably Resmed... that narrows it down to the two mentioned above.
I'd recommend the 'for her'.

Re: Newly diagnosed and machine questions.
Do all machines provide efficacy and event tracking or only a few? I'm unfortunately working with state Medicaid for now so just want to be sure I am getting the best treatment possible. Thank you for all the comments so far.
Re: Newly diagnosed and machine questions.
No, they don't, which is why a list was provided for you to research (as most of us had to do early on). Btw, the 'for Her' model is only incidentally about color but has the most advanced features, though the other Resmed's just next to it are excellent too... Autos can DO plain Cpap if necessary (a few people like/do better with it) but plain Cpaps don't do auto, and limit your therapy options quite a bit - and don't let them tell you they cost more because they don't as far as insce. co's go, only the DME's may take a small hit and they're not your responsibility.
There are other 'tracking' programs out there, not all work with those machines by any means and none come close to giving the info Sleepyhead does... it's free, designed specifically by an ex-forum member (on a Mac tho' completely PC compatible) and easy to use.

Want me to go out to the barn and go looking for a new 2 X 4 for you...or a new hammer?

I am going up there tomorrow to look for a new 2 X 4 for myself. I broke my last one a couple of hours ago.

Re: Newly diagnosed and machine questions.
Oh ok thanks. I didn't realize that full data meant event tracking. Thanks for the helpful information
