Aerophagia risks?

Post by metallikat36 » Mon Mar 04, 2019 2:44 pm

I know aerophagia (air swallowing) is a common CPAP side effect. Are there people who are living with this daily and have decided to continue doing so in order to keep their current pressure settings? I definitely have a trade off where if I decrease my pressure, the aerophagia is less, but I also sleep worse. I read a couple scary case reports of OCD children swallowing air all day and needing surgery on their gut. How concerned should one be of the risks of chronic aerophagia?

I swallow more air on my side, and hence pretty well only sleep on my back. It is too bad, as that aside, I sleep much better on my side.

Try the other side - I'm not joking, it can make a difference, but if not let us know.

The risk in adults using CPAP is only to disruption of sleep. ( https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4025155/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2587247/ )

Are you able to eat normally, digest your food and have normal bowel movements? If so, there is no risk to the digestive system.

Here is a cpaptalk wiki article with some tips on preventing and dealing with aerophagia - wiki/index.php/Aerophagia
