Unexplained gaps in treatment per night
Hey folks,
For the past week, Sleepyhead has reported gaps in my treatment. It *looks* like I'm taking my mask off and putting it back on without memory of it. My partner swears he was up during this time and I was wearing it, though I'm not sure he was awake during this time. This report seems to be one hour ahead.
What gives? Anyone ever seen this? I have five nights of graphs that look like this.

Those gaps look like when you turn the machine off and then on. Do you have the machine settings for auto on and auto off set? This could be caused by you stopping and starting to breathe for some reason and that is why your partner says you had your mask on.

Turn off SmartStart, this is a ResMed feature that will turn the device on or off depending on whether it detects breathing or not.
Turn Ramp on, set to Auto and set to a pressure level slightly below your normal therapy level, say 7. This will create a short marker in your graph of 7, whenever the device is powered on. If you see this, we know the machine has been powered down and then back on.
How stable is you power?
How secure is the plug and outlet?
Ask your partner to look if mask is on and make an effort to determine if machine is on.

Could be bugs in SH, if you feel up to getting a copy of Resscan 5.9 and double checking, you'd know for sure.sleepy-programmer wrote: ↑Fri Mar 01, 2019 11:04 amHey folks,

Re: Unexplained gaps in treatment per night
Ah, SmartStart. Thanks all. I'll try turning this off tonight.
I tried wearing the mask but only breathing out of my mouth, that didn't turn the mask off. But I suppose if there was a large enough leak the machine would turn off. So weird.

I've had Ramp on previous nights this happened. Pretty sure the machine is going off and back on. Graphs clearly show my machine starting over at the ramp level. Power, plug, and outlet seem stable. I've asked my partner to pay attention whenever he happens to wake up early.Dog Slobber wrote: ↑Fri Mar 01, 2019 11:38 amTurn off SmartStart, this is a ResMed feature that will turn the device on or off depending on whether it detects breathing or not.

Please keep us informed.
Remember that the ramp is a matter of personal preference, If you feel that the initial pressure is inadequate, shorten the ramp time or disable it altogether. If the initial pressure seems to high, increase the ramp time. If it's good the way it is, leave it alone.

My suggestion to use Ramp had nothing to do with comfort, nor was it suggested to imply that a ramp setting had anything to do with the cause of these timeout periods.D.H. wrote: ↑Fri Mar 01, 2019 1:59 pmPlease keep us informed.

The ramp suggestion was to help determine if the problem lies in the reporting, or if the machine was truly turning off and on.
The OP's machine's pressure is 8-12 and at the beginning of both session the pressure is 8cm and we see almost immediately the machine starts adjusting.
Had ramp been on and set to 7cm we should have seen the session at 3:30 start at 7cm and then sometime there after move to 8cm and begin therapy.
If the second session at 8:00 started at 7cm ( or some value below 8cm), we could conclude that since we are in ramp the machine has been restarted. If the session was at a value not 7cm and between 8-12 then we know its a data/sleepyhead reporting problem. With the data at 8cm (his starting pressure) this suggests a machine start, but we can't be sure.
Nothing to do with ramp comfort, or ramp causing it. Was suggesting ramp to help diagnose the problem.

Re: Unexplained gaps in treatment per night
I've also had my machine shut down if the powersupply overheated, so that could be another reason. make sure the power supply isn't covered by anything or just faulty and overheating.
It sounds like you have a nasal interface? If you are having an apnea event and leaking all the air out of your mouth the machine could detect this as a "full leak" and turn off as well. If you're getting dry mouth at all I'd suggest taping and or cervical collar/chinstrap.

Instead of Sleep apnea it should be called "Sleep deprivation, starving of oxygen, being poisoned by high CO2 levels, damaging the body and brain while it's supposed to be healing so that you constantly get worse and can never get healthy Apnea"

Re: Unexplained gaps in treatment per night
Does this look like mouth leak? I have a number of them per night since I turned off SmartStart. One of them prompted me to take my mask off for 3 hours.

To me that has too high a flow and duration for a mouth leak it looks more like a mask removalsleepy-programmer wrote: ↑Tue Mar 05, 2019 1:58 pmDoes this look like mouth leak? I have a number of them per night since I turned off SmartStart. One of them prompted me to take my mask off for 3 hours.

Re: Unexplained gaps in treatment per night
well a full mouth leak coinciding with apnea could look like a full mask removal... all the air shooting out of the mouth, but were that to happen it would be surprising if the user didn't wake up, but I suppose anything is possible with a blackout if oxygen is already low from unsuccessful therapy.

… maybe I'm sleeping on it funny? I've tried sleeping with a neck brace also, doesn't seem to help.

A quick pull the pillows away from the nostrils and refit the mask and then put it right back on the nose....I think that would give you that spike.

Re: Unexplained gaps in treatment per night
Good point. I do this to itch my nose if I have to. Would be nice if I'd then put the mask back on my face.

Frequently, itches around the nose are due to nose hair being blown around by the airflow... and trimming things in there has often been reported to help.sleepy-programmer wrote: ↑Tue Mar 05, 2019 11:14 pmGood point.
