Distribution of pressures used to treat OSA

Post by katestyles » Wed Feb 27, 2019 4:48 pm

My husband just asked me if my required pressure is "normal".

Now we all know that "normal" is just a setting on the dryer, but as a math teacher, I am a little intrigued.

Is there any information about the distribution of pressures used to treat OSA?

There's probably a poll somewhere around here.

I saw a poll about pressures used....it was years and years ago back when I first started cpap.

It ended up being a typical bell curve kind of results with the peak of the curve being at around 10 cm..and about as many used less than 10 as used more than 10 cm.
I don't remember how many participated in the poll but I think it was just a forum member poll and not something from the outside being documented.

Most CPAPs on the market can be set between 4cmH2O and 20cmH2O at increments of 1cmH2O or finer.

The correlation between the current measures of severity (AHI, oxygen desaturation, and duration of events) and the pressure setting (as determined by titration) is a very loose one. At this time, the pressure setting is not a measure of severity (that may some day change).

Thanks. I'll see if I can track down the poll.

The doctor who initially diagnosed me with OSA said that neck size was a very good predictor of OSA.
So maybe neck size correlates with pressure.
I would guess a fair number(not all) of the men of this forum shop at the big and tall store.

My wife's pressure is just a high as mine is. In fact, some nights hers runs higher than mine does. I started my treatment about two years before she did. I'm going on four years and she is going on two years of treatment.

Pressure is what is needed to keep the airways open and that depends on many things unique to each person, such as tongue size and floppiness, size of airways, airways susceptibility to inflammation and swelling, preferred sleep position, more pressure needed during REM sleep phase.

The pressure required by most patients with sleep apnea ranges between 6 and 14 cmH2O.

Unfortunately, the article does not provide a citation for this claim.

That quote is referring to straight CPAP machines. The fact that auto machines are very popular should be considered.

Interesting. I am on bipap because of my high pressures. I am female 5'5" tall.

Is this statement from a ten-year-old source good enough for an Internet forum?:
"CPAP, which is the most commonly used form of PAP, typically uses between 5 and 15 cm of water pressure to maintain airway patency."-- Andrew N. Goldberg, in Sleep Apnea and Snoring, 2009. https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/me ... y-pressure

I can guarantee that the most widely used form of CPAP uses between 4 and 20 cm of water pressure.
