Masks with diffused exhausts please

Post by Sluggish » Sat Feb 23, 2019 11:07 am

My P10 is no longer a good mask. I have no idea why but it just doesn't work anymore. Leaks every night. Headgear always stretches out to the point where it doesn't do it's job etc.... Same thing with the smaller female headgear.

I need to start looking at options (again). I already know from experience that I cannot use any mask with a standard exhaust.

Can someone please tell me again which masks have the diffused exhaust ports? Last I checked there were only two options but I can't remember what they were.

Thanks in advance.

this isn't what you asked and i know i get irked when someone doesn't answer my question, BUT....

have you tried washing that p10 headband? once washed and dried it should shrink up a bit. i've managed to use the same p10 now for going on two years.

good luck!

F & P Brevida and F & P Pilairo Q if looking at nasal pillows with diffused venting.

Both have headgear that will be easier to adjust and make up for any stretching of any fabric.

The Bleep/DreamPort...venting is silent but at this moment not diffused but easy to rig up a DIY diffuser...see my review on it.
In future plans is the addition of a little clip on piece similar to the clip on diffuser of the F & P diffusers....but it's not available just yet.

I don't remember which nasal cushion masks offer diffused venting...sorry...the F & P ESON is the only one that comes to mind at the moment.

The new QuietAir elbow that ResMed uses with the F20 and F30 (and I don't know what other masks they might be using this elbow on) is much quieter and gentler than the previous elbow, if noise is the issue.

Thanks! No problem suggestions are always welcome. I have indeed tried washing them and they do indeed shrink by almost 1.5 inches but once they are dry a gently pull on each end brings them right back to their previous length. Basically the shrink doesn’t hold. Also of note, I’m already using the shorter (tighter) women’s band. The men’s band was too loose after the first couple of days. The women’s band initially pushed my nose half way up my face but that was a small price to pay for the solid seal it provided. Now after months it too has stretched.

well, rats! sorry that didn't work for you.

ETA- you could buy replacement straps for your P10 if you don't find a suitable different mask-

Have you tried the little clips that ResMed makes to tighten the P10 straps? (The clips come with new straps.) I admit that I am not fond of those clips as I find they pop off and get lost if you don't find some way to secure them, but they do tighten the headband.

Just a wild thought, if you have a large headgear that is well stretched, I wonder if you could cut the straps where they split, sew velcro on them and the other part of the strip, and have adjustable straps?

Whenever I wash my P10 headgear I let it soak in clean water for at least 5 minutes after that and then squeeze & dry.
The headgear has always stayed shrunken for me but my oldest one is only 2 years old.

Headgear has always been the most replaced item on my masks, first the Mirage Quattro, and now the P10. I'm still on the same frame, after several years on the P10, second pillow, and several headgears.

The Bleep Dreamport that Pugsy mentioned doesn't *have* a headgear... but you do have to buy new sticky tape bits for every night.

Maybe you have a different p10 mask than my P10. All elastic stretches naturally over time. Just like old socks or the waistband of boxer shorts. If yours truly stayed shrunk then you wouldn’t be noticing that it shrinks every time you wash it.

I am taking precise measurements of the band when brand new. Then again before washing to measure the stretch. Then again after washing to see the shrinkage. Then a final measurement after wearing it for a few nights. Data shows that they stretch and the shrinkage doesn’t hold.

But does the dreamport have diffused exhaust?

Yes. The clips are garbage. They were added by resmed as an afterthought because people were complaining.

As for the Velcro idea... I have a similar plan. Just waiting for the headgear to wear out enough to cut it. Hoping hot glue works for attaching because super glue sure doesn’t.

Noise and blowback are the issues with all non-diffused exhausts. I have yet to find one that doesn’t wake me up all night. Higher AHI with those masks than without. As far as I can tell NOBODY likes a non-diffused exhaust but for some reason only 2 masks (nasal pillow) offer this.

I have often wondered if a single person in the R&D dept. actually has sleep apnea.

Well.....I have never been one to stick with any mask if another mask comes along that meets my own needs better.
One of my needs has always been as little on my face and head as possible. I simply don't like headgear. Now I used it because I had to but that doesn't mean I had to like it.

While the lack of diffused venting on the Bleep does't really bother me (probably because my pressures are relatively low), I do understand how it can bother others and for that reason I am working on figuring up some simple little way of doing a DIY diffuser until the manufacturer can offer what they plan to offer. Using a ResMed mesh filter works well.
When I am feeling better I plan to work on it to see how I can make it as minimal as possible. My mind is mush right now....so has to be a little later.

I just thought I would throw that mask out to you as an option. No headgear at all to mess with.
I am keeping the P10 as my back up mask....I realize that there will be times when I might not want to use the Bleep for one reason or another.

Between the Brevida and the Pilairo.....the Brevida pillows seemed a little smaller to me and for that reason I would prefer the Brevida over the Pilairo if choosing between those 2 masks. Remember my "less on my face" thing...that includes cushion/pillow size.
