Anyone have Nasal Septum Deviation or a Perforated Nasal Septum - Repaired / Surgery?

Post by metsfan302 » Thu Feb 07, 2019 6:02 am

I am wondering if anyone has had repairs/ surgery for either - Nasal septum deviation vs. perforated nasal septum

and how is the procedure / recovery etc???

Did it help you breath or help with your sleep, apnea or AHI?

Thanks for your input/time

I had a septoplasty. I've also had UPPP, genoglossal advancement, and hyoid advancement. If I had it to do over again, the only surgery I would have had would be the septoplasty. It enormously helped with airflow through my nose. Before the septoplasty, I couldn't use a nasal pillows mask because of the difficulty getting enough air through my nose. Now I can use nasal pillows. I find it easier to breathe through my nose in all situations, awake or asleep.

I can't speak to recovery from the septoplasty alone as it was done at the same time as the UPPP.

I had one years ago, when I was 18. Couldn’t breath through my nose, at all, from about age of 6 on, but Drs didn’t want to do surgery until I was done growing. It did help tremendously, I could pull air through my nose. My septum still isn’t perfect, I still have to pull, it isn’t easy and I always revert to mouth breathing. At least air can get through though, which was a huge improvement  I actually would consider another surgery if it would improve my nasal airflow to be able to nose breath more often. It sounds luxurious! When looking at all the diagrams of our airway, I can now see how inefficient it is to be a mouth breather.

As far as the procedure itself.I don’t recall recovery being too big of a deal. Black eyes and a nose cast for awhile. You have to be cautious while it is healing not to bump it. I don’t recall any pain. I would definitely consider it if you can’t breath through your nose.

I just had a Septoplasty and a Turbinate reduction, using radio frequency, in December. It's amazing how much better I can breath. I wasn't able to use my pap for about a week after the surgery. Slept propped up on pillows and in a recliner. Neither my AHI or pressure have changed. My doctor thought it would have changed because of the enlarged turbinates, but it has not. You will have splints in your nose for a few days. Once those come out, you will feel so much better. The first few days were painful. After the splints came out, it was definitely more comfortable. It has been 2 months and occasionally, if I rub my nose the wrong way, I will feel a little pain.

I had a Septoplasty and Turbinate reduction last August.

The surgery really wasn't a big deal, didn't sleep much that night.

Couldn't use my CPAP for a while after words, and slept sitting up in a wedge pillow. Stints stayed in for 9 days and noticed a huge improvement when they were removed.

My surgery wasn't 100% successful but a huge improvement over pre-surgery. I'm able to use Nasal Pillows, infact the Nasal Pillows slightly inflate my nasal passages and I can breath easier. Didn't notice any change I my AHI.

I'm glad I had it done.

How long before you were 100%? Like if you moved your nose a certain way, it didn't hurt anymore?

I'm not sure I'm at 100%, nor do I think I'll ever be.

I'm guessing that it took about 2 month for the pain to go away completely.

Some parts of my nose still feels numb, and breathing is still constricted and because of the narrowness I get discomfort from congestion.

I've read that while most of the swelling goes away within the first few months, slight swelling can still persist for as long a year after. I'm hoping there is still improvement left for me.

It's only been this past week where the numbness on the roof of my mouth by my two front teeth went away. I wasn't expecting that.
