How long does it take...

Post by DBinAZ » Tue Nov 21, 2006 8:49 am

before you start feeling refreshed in the morning? If I had a good sleep, I figured I would feel good? I am still sleepy, although I seem to get up easier. I tend to still fall asleep at work as well. Started taking no-doze since I don't drink coffee.
BTW, I have been using CPAP for 3 weeks or so. My AHI 7 night avg is around 8 I think. My 7 day avg. leak is 34L/sec or something like that.
I have the datacard, but I get my reader today, so hopefully that will tell me what is actually going on at night.

It takes different amounts of time for different people. I didn't start feeling really refreshed for several months. Others have posted they felt better almost immediately. Like most things in life, you have to find your own way.

I think RemStars report leak in liters per minute (LPM). Without knowing what mask you have and what pressure you are using, 34 is just a number, without meaning. This chart might help determine if you leak rate in normal, or not.

How long to feel better?

Post by kteague » Tue Nov 21, 2006 9:50 am

Hopefully that data reader will help you fine tune for better numbers - AHI is still a little high. And while every one who straps on a mask at night is getting treatment, all treatment is not equal. Therapeutic treatment will be when your pressures are adequate, events are minimal, leaks addressed, etc. When your therapy is optimized, so will be the benefits in how you feel. But even then, restoration is not usually immediate and absolute. The body and mind may begin recouperating the moment therapy starts, but like a race, each runner has their own pace. What's important is that you are in the race and well on your way toward the goal of improved healthy and well being. Best wishes.
Kathy

What was your titration pressure? What equipment and mask do you use?
Your AHI's with treatment equal someone with mild sleep apnea without therapy. I believe if you can get you AHI's below say 3, you will then start seeing an improvement in you daytime sleepiness. If your leak rate is 34 lpm then you may be ok at a pressure of 9-1cm for most typical masks. If it 34 lps then you have a leak problem that must be corrected to get the benefit of therapy.
More info please!

Most of that info is listed in my sig.

Can't remember if the REMStar says L/s or L/m, per minute sounds more logical.

DBinAZ,
Sorry i missed your profile in my haste. The remstar measures in LPM. Your leak number may be ok.
What is your current pressure setting and at what pressure were you titrated in your PSG.

Hey, db! Welcome to the international fraternity of hoseheads! LOL

You might want to check this link on how long it takes to start feeling betterl It's from our lightbulb section. Hope it helps.

cpaptalk-articles/recovery-CPAP-adaptation-stages.html

As for me, I've noticed that when my AHI is over 2.5, I feel really tired and sluggish the next day. When my AHI is under 2.0, then I usually feel good.

It varies, needless to say. Hopefully you'll be one of the lucky ones who start feeling better quickly. But, if not, hang in there!

DBinAZ,
7cm appears to not be working for you based your AHI numbers.
You might want to go higher in little steps. Try 8cm for a week and see what the AHI's do. If you get the numbers going down you might want to go higher.
This is all provided you don't have medical issues that would preclude increasing the pressure.
My hunch is you might do well at 9cm.
Good Luck!!

so how does it know that I am having an event?
I don't have any issues that would prevent me from going higher. I get my card reader tonite, so I will see what is going on and possibly try the 8cm.

Your question requires a long answer, but to make it short lets say the machine measures airflow patterns and track these by type event (apnea, hypopnea, flow limitation, snore) over the course of the night. The machines have very complex software and algorithms that measure performance and compliance. If you have the clinicain manual, I would read over several times and you will get a sense of what the machine does.
Let us know how you do!!!

At a pressure of 8 your mask has a leak rate of 23.4. You need to get your leaks under control. Are you positive that you aren't mouth breathing? These are the first things you need to take care of.
After that you might need to change your pressure.
