Tips for surviving a camping trip without machine
Tips for surviving a camping trip without machine
Hey all - I'm don't think I'm a severe case as far as apneas, but definitely do snore a lot ans such. I've had a limited number of times in the past 3-4 years that I've spent without my machine. If I recall, it wasn't terrible, but coming up I have an overnight camping trip with my kids and I'd like to be prepared so that it's as pleasant as possible. Anyone have any suggestions or tips for me? Thanks!
Re: Tips for surviving a camping trip without machine
Sleep sitting upright? Don't have much fun? Look at a small (tho' unfortunately often noisy) machine made for travelling? PM Cap'n Loki here = he's the battery, camping, etc. expert.

Battery and 12v adapter. You want the kids to be able to sleep, don't you?

Could I see an example of the battery? Are they specific to your model of CPAP, because the ones I've seen like that are very expensive.

If your kids are like mine were, they never slept much when we camped, especially the first night. By the second night, they were pretty tired and went to bed a little earlier.

Check out my thread on batteries. The recommended system is about 12 posts down.

If you just want the description of my recommended system:

If you have a DreamStation the 12V adapter is $25, if its a ResMed its $85. The battery plus charger and a few accessories should be about $120. It will run several days, depending on settings, etc. This also serves as a good backup for power failures.

Re: Tips for surviving a camping trip without machine
If you were seriously considering going for the whole night with no CPAP at all, going without the humidifier shouldn't worry you. As for battery power, one key question is transport. A CPAP with all its gubbins PLUS a battery and lead/adapter would get pretty heavy if you're hiking to the camp site. If you're camping alongside your car, of course it doesn't matter.Clizby wrote: ↑Sat Mar 23, 2019 5:30 pmWhat if you did have humidity? If all you want to do is run in CPAP mode without humidifier, for one night, you could get away with quite a small battery, saving weight and cost. I'm sure somebody on here will be able to tell you how small you can go, once they know what machine you have.

Depends on the settings.Clizby wrote: ↑Sat Mar 23, 2019 5:30 pmWhat if you did have humidity? Would it last a night?palerider wrote: ↑Sun Sep 30, 2018 12:20 amEnough power for *FIVE* nights, without humidity.Jas_williams wrote: ↑Sat Sep 29, 2018 1:42 pmGet a scooter battery

Re: Tips for surviving a camping trip without machine
There are too many variables to even give an approximate answer. If you use the highest settings in a dry climate, you'll probably get one night, but the water will probably run out at 3AM. If you use the very lowest settings (i.e. just a hint of humidity) you might get 3 nights.
Of course, there's nothing wrong with get two or more scooter batteries (they're about $65 for the 35 Amp-hour size) or if you don't mind lugging a heavy battery, you can easily go up to 100 AH.
If you're camping in a humid area, you can probably go without added humidity. As the temp drops at night, the relative humidity goes up. I certainly never use humidity on my boat. On the other hand, if you favor the desert or winter camping you might find it helpful.
The thread linked to in my sig has more info than you want - most of the good stuff is on the first dozen posts. It includes, for example, a table of power usage with different settings (for my machine, of course!)

Re: Tips for surviving a camping trip without machine
I don't want to scare you (okay, I do) but I had an acquaintance who (about 8 years ago) left to visit relatives over a Christmas break (and he left his xpap at home).
He came back in a coffin.
Not the expected outcome, of course. However, it's a sad event that I keep in mind whenever, and wherever I travel.
