What mattress do you use
Hi All,
After suffering with a old mattress which had gone soft, I went ahead and bought a new one from a online store . But I am finding it too soft for my taste. (I have been getting back pain from lack of support.) I wanted to check whether someone can recommend a good firm mattress. I would guess I am at the extreme end of firmness spectrum. I actually like lying down on a carpeted floor.

My wife and I love our Bear mattress. It's too firm for her, and just a tad too firm for me when cold, but it solved my back pain problems real quick. Even she loves it now that she's used to it.
It's marketed towards athletic people for "muscle recovery" with some voodoo infrared conversion stuff which I have no comment on, but I do feel great compared to my old mattress and memory foam topper. It also doesn't get anywhere near as hot as the toppers did.

Where I live, they have mattress stores. Bricks and mortor. Mattresses are very personal and subjective. It would be nice to try them out first before buying. Once you have a name and model number, you can buy anywhere.

Re: What mattress do you use
I like a website called sleep like the dead. I have not found a magic mattress brand or construction material. My past philosophy was to look at a price range where I could afford a new one every 6-8 years. My next mattress might be a low to medium priced firm coil spring mattress without a pillow top and I will add a 3 inch natural latex topper of high quality. The idea is that the mattress will outlast the topper which is replaceable for less money.

Re: What mattress do you use
We've fallen in love with our "hybrid mattress" made by Serta. It combines the support of inner springs with several layers of memory foam. I thought the memory foam would create heat like the foam topper we had on our old mattress, but this particular model is very cool and comfortable.
Living in South Florida, even with the A/C blasting you can't afford to generate any more heat than you need
I would also suggest getting an adjustable base if you can swing it. We splurged and went this route and I highly recommend it. Helps with keeping the old breathing passages more open and congestion issues. I like that it can be adjusted in a sort of flattened waveform which raises the legs slightly too. They call it "zero gravity".
Good luck with your search. Mattress buying is a tricky journey.

I seem to be in the never-ending search for a "Goldilocks" mattress. Too firm and it hurts my upper back and shoulders. Too soft and it hurts my lower back. Mediums seem to hurt both.
Good Luck!

It's a wonderful mattress! Have had it for two years and we decided it's the best mattress we ever purchased. This particular hybrid was a few hundred dollars more, but so worth it.

We use the Temperedic. It is very firm, but has been called the best mattress in the world. When you don't "try out" a mattress at the store, you run the risk of not getting what you think you are. For me, that has been a hard lesson to learn when I started buying stuff on-line.

Re: What mattress do you use
I have a very old but good mattress but I'm not sure the brand. On it's own its firm as a rock. Was great for my back but if I slept on my side it was horrible. After years and years I've kept the rock slab but have been using a 4" thick memory foam topper that makes all the difference for us. The support of the supper firm mattress and the give of the foam on top to help with side sleep and pressure points. I would say with something like a mattress it's not going to be a one size fits all. Kind of like with cpap masks. I recommend going to a store and trying things out or look into on of those mattresses like the "Purple" were you can try it and send it back if it isn't for you.
Also more expensive isn't always better. Back when IKEA sold 3 or 4 different types of futon mattress as an example,
we tried them all out with out stopping to look at what they were or price etc... after me and my wife agreed on which one was our favorite we looked at the prices and the one we liked was the cheapest one by far. Try it and deside or make sure you have a good hassle free return process if you dont like it.
Good luck in your search,

The online mattress sites are much better now. Most have a 3 month no question asked return policy. Some even have an year for you to try out the mattress.Sheriff Buford wrote: ↑Fri Sep 21, 2018 3:29 amWe use the Temperedic. It is very firm, but has been called the best mattress in the world. I ordered the one which was the firmest we could find in our price range but it turned out to be too soft. I will probably return it. I do not want to do it again. It is not about the money but to avoid creating more garbage.

I probably end up going to the store. One thing that worries me is whether the mattress with keep the firmness as time passes. We got a mattress from Ikea which served us well for 4 years but now it has become too soft. (I am not complaining. I guess it was ~$200 so getting 4 years out it is a good deal).
The online mattress stories have extensive reviews. That is something that I was looking for.

Re: What mattress do you use
With all these Tempurpedic suggestions the TEMPUR-Topper Supreme might fit into my budget. Though I'm still not convinced I like that stuck in a hole feeling. It's very comforting surrounded by memory foam but I roll around a lot. I'll have to test one out again.
