Very low blood pressure at night

Post by moonboots » Tue Sep 18, 2018 5:54 am

Has anyone experienced very low blood pressure at night. I had an overnight monitor and my night time pressure most the night was 90/50 but at 7am it dropped to 84/37.Would anyone know Is this related to my apena ? I looked online but got limited information, I also searched this forum. Also the night of the monitor i would have been up to the toilet 5 or 6 times.

Looking back at your posts the toilet problem was there way before the CPAP along with headache.... The BP concerns should be discussed with your doctor.

It's normal for Cpap to lower BP but yours is beyond the norm, so definitely talk to a knowledgable sleep doctor, whether pulmonologist, neurologist or whoever you and your GP agree would be the right fit.

Thanks for the reply’s , I’m waiting on my doctor to get back to me. Unfortunately he isn’t well informed on sleep apnea and nor is the specialist I’m seeing about it.

Blood pressure tends to be lower when you’re sleeping, assuming things are working correctly otherwise, as I was told by my doctor years ago when they learned I was taking BP meds at night to simplify things. How low is too low? If it causes you problems, it’s too low, in practical terms. “Problems” would involve not being able to make sudden movements such as standing up without getting woozy. If you’ve just done intense exercise and you suddenly come to a stop instead of slowing down a bit more gradually, your blood pressure will drop precipitously and you’ll likely get woozy, even though it’s far above your normal resting minimum: this is why when running in races, you’re strongly encouraged to not come to a quick, dead stop at the end, because it might be a quick and then a dead stop as your end, because it can be a stress on the heart.

This isn’t an absolute hard number that’s the same for everyone. As a springboard to further sources, wikipedia lists that it follows a circadian cycle, and tends to be lower at night: if it isn’t that’s more of a problem.

thanks for that Snoregone , it isnt causing me problems so im not overly concerned as my average for the night is 90/49 it just seemed to drop very low once, I also have my apena under more control since that test i am now only getting up to the toilet 2 or 3 times. I wonder will the toilet uses ever stop or whats normal ? I dont know whats normal anymore as i have been getting up 4-6 times for 10 years at least

If your pressure settings (or some other feature) were never followed up on in relation to how well you've done or how you feel on C- Apap, then you may never have been adequately treated. Your doctor needs to refer you to a proper sleep specialist for help.

thanks Julie unfortunately the specialist i have been refereed to says my condition is under control and when i lose weight it will go away, all after one night sleep study and not even asking for the 5 months of data from my cpap machine. thats why i joined this forum i found all the doctors and specialist i have seen are not well informed on sleep apnea and i have seen about 3 or 4 of them.

Can you ask for another referral? If your "specialist" is talking about weight, then he/she is sadly out of date about apnea!

After 10 years looking for answers I’m finished with doctors with regard to apnea for a while unless I meet someone who personally recommends one who knows his stuff, thanks for your input Julie

The blood pressure problem is likely completely separate from the sleep apnea. If you are overweight or obese and have such a low blood pressure, then you need to confer with your doc or see a cardiologist. It's true that you can have low blood pressure and it be completely normal for you, but I'd want to check it out to be sure that there isn't another underlying problem. Fatphobic doctors have a tendency to blame everything on your weight, but low blood pressure isn't typically associated with obesity. Sometimes the solution is easy - I just had to increase my salt intake. Another option is to wear pressure stockings at night.

I didn't follow your first thread, because PLMD isn't something I'd have had anything to contribute to, so pardon me if this was covered there.

If you've been taking BP meds before you got on cpap, and you're being treated well (I did see a screenshot with a good AHI), then you may be being *over treated* with the BP meds now, since untreated SA leads to high BP.

So, talking it over with the doc that prescribed the BP meds would be appropriate.

Since my first post on plmd I no longer think that is my problem. I wrongly assumed when I was using my cpap and still waking up to go to toilet 5 or 6 times a night that it must be something else as my doctor said my Apena was under control. But after reading some of the posts here I upped my min pressure from 4 to 6 and only wake up 2 or 3 times to use the toilet which it’s a big improvement but wish I could sleep all night. As for BP med I’m not on any of them or anything else. Thanks for your input

Things may improve. Some more pressure may smooth things out more... There's more to sleep disturbances than just AHI. Post another chart or two?
