At a loss

Post by kevinbinger » Sun Sep 16, 2018 6:30 am

The past several nights have been a pain! I have been using my equipment for approx 18 months now problem free. I’ve had the occasional issue. Dog chewing hose in half and having to tape it together to nurse it a day or so til a new one arrives. Still no issues. Hose has been chewed again. Ordered new one. This time though I tape it up. I’m hearing all kinds of popping sounds from best I can describe in the “check valve” in the elbow of the face mask. Of course this happening half asleep I feel all over the hose for other leaks possibly. Nothing. Add more tape just in case. Still the same. I saved my last elbow and headgear mi us the mask from last time I changed masks. Swapped the elbow, same issue. Looked around on here for similar issues but most were saying they had water or moisture in hose. Doesn’t appear to be. I’m only set at a “3” on my humidifier. Unchanged since first getting equipment. Even changed starting pressure from 4 to 5 to see if that would help. I can’t see the hose being the culprit or even the elbows since there is no change when swapping them. The only item I have never changed is the tank. Lastly, and I will wrap this up. Sorry. Just trying to put ad much info as possible. Usually when the machine is just sitting here powered on. You can pick the hose up and hear and feel a ever so slight “breeze”. Sitting here with it now though, it still can barely be heard but it sounds like almost a Diesel engine at idle, a luh luh luh luh luh pulse sounding. Ugh! Again any point in the right direction would be amazing. As many of you know now two nights in a row of this mess without my treatment. Staying kinda sleepy. 😔

Oh! Forgot to add. You run the mask fitment and air will pour out of the elbow saying I have a leak. Not every time though. Grrrr

Ok, first, that valve isn't a check valve, it's an anti-asphyxiation valve. When things are working properly, the valve is shut tight all the time your machine is on, when the machine is off, it opens, so that you can breathe, and don't suffocate. Again, it's supposed to be closed tight when the machine is on, and open when the machine is off.

Water in the hose will cause a strange popping sound. Maybe that's it.

Otherwise, maybe you've got so many holes in your hose, that no effective pressure is reaching the mask, and the valve isn't staying shut... but that would be happening immediately after you turned the machine on.

Did you take the hose off and see if there was water in it? just because there hadn't been condensation before doesn't mean there might not be now.

That's the machine 'cooling down' and trying to dry the hose after you turn it off. If you're not getting that breeze, it sure sounds like your hose has water blocking it.

No water in the hose. I checked that from the get go. A hose is already ordered. Have to wait and see if it fixes the issue. Thanks

If you haven't changed the humidity, has the temperature changed in your room?

For example, we're getting an unusual September cold snap, and I've had to adjust my humidity & temperature to get comfortable again.

Just a thought while you wait for a replacement.

New hoses are also available on amazon, some with next day, maybe even same day shipping.

You can also get new hoses at some truck stops, because a lot of truckers use cpaps, and truck stops are offering supplies to fill that need. call around.

I'd suggest a hose cozy for the new hose, it might make it less of a chew toy.

No truck stops around here. I’m gonna run by the med supply place tomorrow and let them look it all over after work. Get a new mask and have two hoses coming from amazon. Ah the things we take for granted about like a car until problems arise. Lol

I *strongly* advise having a spare of *everything*.

Take your mask/hose along with you and see if they can help you figure out what's wrong with it... that way you can test whether what you're getting fixes the problem, and maybe know what to look for next time (if it happens again).

Thanks, I appreciate the help. I took everything apart and cleaned it really well again. It all seems to be working fine at the moment. Still going to restock tomorrow.
