Nasal Pillows Acting Weird

Post by Mattiooo » Tue Aug 21, 2018 11:39 am

I just started with CPAP in February. I use an Airsense 10 with Nasal Pillows mask.

Everything has been going great since the beginning. Then, all of the sudden, my nasal pillows started doing something weird. When I breathe in, it feels like something is moving near my nose. It's like something is moving with the breath and makes a single noise or sometimes a slight vibration. The single noise is more like a little slap of the rubber.

I have no idea which part is moving or why it suddenly started doing that. Any insight would be wonderful and greatly appreciated.

As the nasal pillows "age" they tend to get softer and floppier, so they need to be replaced. For SOME nasal pillows you can extend the life by putting a rubber O-ring around the neck of the pillow--if you look through the files you may see a photo. But if they haven't been replaced recently, you might as well do that. Medicare will pay for up to two sets of nasal pillows a month, and most insurers follow Medicare's replacement schedule.

The other thing to look at is whether they might have turned inside out. I haven't used your mask, but I know from the various ResMed nasal pillows that they pop inside out sometimes when you wash them. Look closely. It's another sign the nasal pillows are ready to be replaced.

Some nasal pillows (like the P10) are double coned, with a stiffer inner cone and a softer outer cone. When cleaning the pillows, it's fairly easy to invert the cones, and then 'all the sudden', things are different.
