how much "stuff" is attached to you?

Post by CPAPSteve » Sat Aug 18, 2018 12:38 am

So I'm travelling on vacation again and I was unpacking all my stuff from my CPAP bag and it got me wondering how much stuff do you folks use for your CPAPing session.

For example I've got a AirTouch F20 FFM, Padacheek liners on almost on the upper and lower face mask straps, I have a padacheek anti leak strap and sometimes I use a sleeping eye mask on top of that. My wife says it is quite the getup I have going on and it almost looks like my face and head is wrapped in so much "headgear".

I do intend to one day resolve my mouth breathing somehow but I can't imagine trying to ALSO augment what I wear to sleep now with a pap cap, or a chin strap or a cervical collar or mouth tape. It would be hard to sleep with all that stuff on me!

My current setup works for me now but I'm wondering what others "wear" to sleep.

Several years ago at a sleep study, the tech laughed at my getup and even called another tech in to look at it. At that point I was wearing a red winter fleece headband/earwarmer over my headgear to hold it in place. Hey, we do what we've got to do. At some point I became so adverse to headgear that ridding myself of it became a goal. Tried the Bella Loops around my ears, but the nasal pillows didn't fit securely enough to work for me. Glad I can use nasal pillows, because ever since I found the TapPap mask I sleep headgear free. The tradeoff for sleeping with nothing on my head is sleeping with something in my mouth. So far I've been happy to make the trade to the mouthpiece. Since I have RLS and PLMD I can be hypersensitive and anything touching me can interfere even more with my sleep. We all have to do what it takes to find our place of success. Even if we're quite a spectacle.

P10 with Padacheek side strap covers because I don't like the dents on my cheeks.

So as little as possible on my face and head.

Now last night I did add one of those stupid little clips to the headgear to take up some tension because the last hot water wash didn't seem to shrink it enough. It was faster than taking off the headgear from the frame and putting a new one one and the decision was made when I saw my last reports at 10PM and the leaks weren't much better. I was in a hurry.

A p10 mask with strap pads to protect my cheeks. The strap pads are very thin, so they don't add any bulk. I've been trying to use a chin strap to stop the mouth from slipping open. I ordered a chinstrap from cpap.com, but find it very bulky, but it works well. Instead, I use a stretchy headband for a chinstrap, it is much less bulky (99 cents at walgreens). For about the last 2 months, I have also slept with a "boot cast" on my right foot for a broken ankle, up to my knee, and on my left foot, and a bootie shoe for broken toes for the other foot. I was a mess.

Please ask yourself this first: "...if I take meds, which do I leave at home because they might be too much of a burden"?

If you put too much effort in trying to remember what you can forget, you may someday forget something you should have remembered - at which point you might really find it difficult to sleep (while breathing) too. I didn't see anything in your list that might indicate the need for a sherpa yet. Personally, I take what I normally would have at home (in kind but not in quantity): PAP with humidifier tank, brick, two masks, as many pillows as needed for the nights away (up to a max of 5), chin strap, and often a sleep mask. It all goes in the AS10 carry bag without difficulty and anything I might consider leaving out doesn't contribute too much to the burden - not when compared to the difficulties caused by not sleeping well. In any case, there are too many variables contributed by a hotel room to add more by trying to shave a few ounces from my load. Plus, since I rarely sleep with other than my constant audience, I couldn't care less what it looks like - if I'm asleep, I don't hear the laughter.

Lately an AirTouch F20 FFM, an XyllMelts tab on gums, a Chin-up strip, a RemZzzs liner, a Pad-A-Cheek anti-leak strap and Pad-A-Cheek mask stabilizer.

We both use Padacheek strap pads, soft cervical collar and mask.

I certainly don’t have so much stuff that I can’t pack any of it in the CPAP bag. I guess padacheeck covers + the anti leak strap plus my sleeping eye mask just makes things feel bulky. I looked “encased” in a torture device. I’ve mentioned this in the past that it looks like something out of a bondage scene. I am just missing the spikes, chains and leather lol!

It ain’t a beauty contest so honestly it doesn’t matter much to me. Sleep is far more important and to everyone’s point nobody sees me except my spouse and the occasional friend that travels with me on vacation.

Hello! I look like Chuck Yeager getting ready for another record breaking flight! F20 nasal mask, 4 pad-a-cheek so that I don't wake up with craters in my face, nasal mask liners so that I don't wake up with a dented nose bridge, and mouth tape... My husband just laughs and says that I need to remember that wearing my "equipment" is keeping me healthy! (Traveling means also bringing 2 small bottles of distilled water - that I buy online - to use while staying overnight in hotels, a replacement filter, and an extra nasal cushion or nasal pillows... just in case, and my CPAP Max 2.0 pillow. The new normal!)

Just don't take this so far that you start psyching yourself out, attitude is important for success.

I travel quite a bit and one thing I always include besides my machine and mask is a 12’ extension cord. I cruise most of the time and some of the older ships have only one outlet in the cabin and it’s by the desk not the bed.

It fits in my case that the machine came in, as does my little purple tube of Lansinoh cream.

That's really stretching the "attached to you" question.

by that logic, the entire planet is attached to you... face, mask cover, mask, hose, machine, power brick, extension cord, socket, building, planet.

P10, straps positioned above and below a messy bun.
The night scrunchy needs to be soft so it will not break my hair.
Soft, stretchy nightwear is essential.
