A good night... But a lot of prep work

Post by MurrayNevada » Wed Aug 15, 2018 7:05 am

My best results to date last night. But it involved much prep:
A F&P Simplus FFM, a bedtime rinse with Biotene, XyllMelts tab on gums, a Chin-up strip, a RemZzzs liner, a Pad-A-Cheek anti-leak strap and Pad-A-Cheek mask stabilizer.

I had similar results using the same procedure with an F20 AirTouch but the Simplus is more comfortable. The Simplus rides lower on the bridge of the nose. I’ve attached a S/H screen shot from last night hoping to get some advice for a further fine tuning.

After all that....how did you sleep and how do you feel?

I follow a very similar routine as you which is a lot of stuff on you head and somewhat of a minor convenience. That being said do you feel better?

I slept well and feel pretty good. Losing the dry-mouth is a blessing. I no longer awaken a couple of time each night with my teeth stuck to my gums. Now it's just one BR break after a few hours and I fall asleep almost instantly after it. The numbers look good but do you see any room for tweaking?

In terms of numbers alone....if that report was my report and I was feeling good and sleeping good...I wouldn't be changing anything.

Now if all that extra stuff you do helps you attain that goal of sleeping good and feeling good....and you are okay with doing it....then do it.

What is your primary goal? A good math score on the reports as in minimal events or good sleep and feel good during the day?
I learned a long time ago that numbers alone don't mean much. My primary goal has always been...good quality sleep or the best I can do and feel decent during the day.

Without sleeping decently and feeling decently then not much else matters.
AHI less than 1.0...I don't even bother looking at anything else.

I think I am putting too much emphasis on the math. I sleep comfortably with the DreamWear FFM (with the same prep) and feel good but my AHI average with it is about 2.5. It also leaks a bit, but not enough to wake me. I'm a bit OCD and that may be making things more difficult for me.

I may have to jump on board with the Biotene, Not liking the sticky mouth thing going on. Awesome numbers, by the way. Maybe one day...

I understand the OCD and numbers thing.
In a way it is our nature because we've been taught to measure health related stuff by "numbers" and in some cases the numbers are extremely important (like blood glucose levels) and in some cases the numbers have a more okay variance built in.

With this cpap stuff we have to come to grips that we can't kill them all and a few of whatever won't kill us either.
Not to mention that there is a fair chance that a few of what we are seeing aren't real anyway.
We have arousals even if we don't remember waking up. They are so brief we don't have time to form a memory but they are arousals none the less and there's a good chance we might have some irregular breathing during that brief arousal that earns some sort of apnea flag.

I rarely get AHI 0.0 with this machine but when I do look at what little gets flagged at least half of it appears to be post arousal flags and not real. So my AHI of 1.0 to 2.0 is really more like 1.0 or less if I toss out the SWJ. For the AHI of less than 1.0...heck I don't even take the time to go look to see if they were real or not.

It took me 6 months to a year to not obsess over the numbers and back then I had even less data to look at.

One of my very best days followed a night when the AHI was 10.2...go figure that one. Back then I only looked at the preceding night's data in the evening because I didn't want to cloud my perception of how my day went by the "numbers" ahead of time and I knew they would.
I had a day about 4 months into therapy where I felt like superwoman (it doesn't happen often though but that's because of other issues) and that evening I thought for sure the AHI just had to be 0.0 but when I looked it was 10.2. It was a fluke...don't know why but it didn't happen again.

Numbers have a place in this therapy but they are not the end all of goals. How we sleep and feel the next day is really what that matters because how we sleep and feel tells us a lot more than just numbers.

Getting ready to go to bed now is like a Hollywood production with all the stuff you have to do.

My wife says that my bedtime routine is more involved than when our daughters were sixteen.

I may have to jump on board with the Biotene, Not liking the sticky mouth thing going on.
A Biotene mouthwash rinse will only help moisturize the mouth for a few minutes. Here is where the hours-long moisturizing comes from:
