New to CPAP

Post by DaWildQC » Wed Aug 08, 2018 5:33 am

Hello!

Monday i received my CPAP machine! Got diagnosed for Obstructive Apnea ... 80 + AHI while i'm in the back position and ~15 AHI when i'm on my side for a final 35 AHI per hour.

I made the titration test and got a prescription pressure of 4CM to 14CM. The technician setted the machine with some comfort settings such as EPR (3) AutoMode Ramp...

In the middle of the night, both of them (this night and tuesday... i felt some kind of popping up feeling in my throat... like my airway was about to collapse... weird sensation...

The machine is pretty quiet... but there is a vibration / pitch noise that the frequency change and sound change when im inhaling and exhaling... i dont know if its normal...

Here is the screenshots from the Sleepyhead machine from the last night... I'm still working on getting used to my mask... so i get some wake up during the night. the first 30mins, i feel like i have not enough air coming... so i have to inhale sometimes from the mouth...

What is your thoughts ? im not an expert and VERY newbie to this... but i think my lowest pressure setting should be at ~~ 7 or 8.

thanks!

Welcome to the forum.

It appears you have selected the wrong machine in your equipment profile.
You have selected the AirSense 10 CPAP machine and instead you have the AirSense 10 AutoSet machine.
That model machine kinda got out of line in the menu choices and you will find it down in the Rs...because it starts with
ResMed and then says AirSense 10 AutoSet.

I tend to agree with you that minimum of 7 or 8 might be a better starting point.

About the buzzing noise which change with the inhaling and exhaling... is that normal ? It's not loud but since i'm kinda affected with noise, i find it hard to go asleep with this.

About the buzzing noise...I can't hear it from here but my machine is silent. I can put my ear on the machine and barely hear the motor noise.
It's not normal for people to hear motor noises...breathing noises yes but motor noises no.

Since it is annoying enough to affect your ability to go to sleep I would be contacting whomever you got the machine from and asking to try a different machine. Maybe you got a lemon...it does happen sometimes.

Seconding that the noise is not normal. The only noise I ever get with mine is if I get water droplets in the tube. Then I get a bit of a brief knocking raspy sound, somewhat like the sound of a congested person breathing through phlegm.

Also seconding that minimum pressure increase. I never even tried to sleep a night at 4cm. One experience of the ramp setting at that level, and I turned ramp off and raised the minimum up to ~6.5cm as I had read on here.

When your minimum is set properly, your pressure graph won't look like a roller coaster. It may have some periods during the night where it elevates for a while (supine sleeping positions, REM sleep etc), but the overall trend line should be relatively flat with most of the night being pretty tight around that line. This means that the pressure is generally where it needs to be, and should need less time to react appropriately to any increases needed. APAPs and bi-level APAPs don't have the ability to increase pressure all that quickly and the further your current pressure is from the required pressure, the more likely it is for unwanted events to creep in.

Your pressure is definitely set too low, I'm thinking a minimum of 8, maybe 9 is going to be needed. leaving the minimum at 4 is indication that the doctor doesn't understand how to set up an auto machine.

Also, please read the sticky post at the top of the forum, "Newbies, PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING" and fix your graphs.

Nice. If there's anything on the snore chart, it should be included too, since snores, flow limitations, obstructive apneas and hypopneas all cause pressure to increase.

Good luck tonight.

Last night it went pretty good... i'm still getting used to the mask... but it's going good so far...

My technician gave me another machine since the first i got was defect... that buzzing sound was anormal... the new one i got is SO MUCH silent... i can't hear it...

I let the prescription settings there and see what happens... i think i'll increase my lower settings... when i start the machine and try to fall asleep, i feel like i dont have enough air and i need to take some breath through my mouth... here is the report ! :) thanks!

Btw: Is that normal in the events flags i can see only 3 sections ? others sections appears only when there is events there ?

I'd suggest raising your minimum to 8. that'll smooth out the pressure line a lot, and give you more air at the beginning.

it's normal to only see those lines if you haven't had any other events show up yet.

I'm looking at your hours - basically 8 hours both of your 1st two nights. You're off to a great start!

Keep up the good work. :) I can assure you that the advice you're getting is sound. Same folks have helped me tremendously.

Yes i'm trying my best to make it works... my quality of sleep is so-so actually... i wake up alot still... i keep my mask on all night so i can getting used to have a mask on my face when sleeping lol...

I need to try some fitting on my mask too... im in the middle of Medium / Small size... last night my mask was a little too tight. When i check my report, i dont have alot of leaks, but when the pressure is going up... we can see there is a little leak in there... i dont know if its a problem...

It does get frustrating sometimes, but just stick with it. Once you're dialed in, it's all worth it.
