Cleaning in Mexico
Cleaning in Mexico
Hi; I'm new to using the CPAP. How does everyone clean their hoses and mask when travelling to Mexico? Not suppose to drink the water, would it be ok to clean hoses and mask?? Thank you.
Re: Cleaning in Mexico
The majority of people don't ever bother with hoses... no need to as only air ever passes through (following being filtered) and goes out the vents.
And I doubt very much that cleaning your mask with the water will kill you... I imagine Mexicans do use it occasionally... but why not just use baby wipes?

Re: Cleaning in Mexico
Just wait till you get home.
However, the "don't drink the water" is related to *intestinal* distress because you're not used to what might be in the water.
You're not drinking the water that is used to clean your cpap.
Do you have the same thoughts about *SHOWERING*???

Re: Cleaning in Mexico
I'd just take some baby wipes in a plastic baggie and use those to wipe off the mask. Don't worry about the hose.

Re: Cleaning in Mexico
If you are worried, and I would be, just boil the water for 20 minutes, or go to Walmart. Heck nowadays i wouldn't be surprised if you could find distilled water at the corner pharmacy, maybe even the grocery (abarrotes).

Re: Cleaning in Mexico
I had an exchange sister from Mexico when I was in high school. Last year, she got married, so this was my first trip to visit her with cpap (3 prior trips). I couldn't find distilled water. They didn't know what I was talking about. They have a special filter so that they don't have to boil water anymore. I used that for my cpap and for brushing teeth. Otherwise I would have used regular bottled water, which was easy to find.

I'd bring the baby wipes and wipe down the mask suggestion.

Re: Cleaning in Mexico
It is important to distinguish between tap water and bottled water for drinking in Mexico.
Tap water is usually good but can be contaminated with bugs that result in GI tract discomfort. Although many people with a healthy GI tract or one that has become adapted have no issue at all.
Bottle water is available everywhere. You can buy a 6 gallon bottle and have it set up in your room if you want it. The cost is small and when you trade in your empty for a full, the cost is even less.
When I travel in Mexico I fill up my water container at the bottle water station in the lobby. I brush my teeth and shower with tap water. I just remember not to drink or swallow that water.
I use baby wipes to clean my mask and do nothing with the hose. I use bottle water in my humidifier. I have never noticed slime in my humidifier but if I did I would clean it with dish soap and rinse with spirits. If they can drop a worm in taquilla why not add a little pink slime for ease of swallowing...
I am still alive...
On the lighter side. Everyone here has an opinion on SoClean. When I did a search on cleaning CPAP equipment while traveling I came across this...

Re: Cleaning in Mexico
I understand that it is an advertisement, but I was wondering if the unit produces enough ozone to purify the water in the humidifier. In looking through the various information I don't think so. Better to just use bottle water.
I screwed up...
Taquila doesn't have a worm in it. Mezcal doesn't either but it can have a moth larva. That changes everything. Pink slime and worm may have a chance of going together, but pink slime and moth larva don't complement each other.
Of course you can always fall back on vodka for a sanitizing rinse.
