Preventing leaks into eyes

Post by Chalkie » Sat Jul 21, 2018 8:38 am

Any tips on prevening leaks into the eyes?

It is getting unbearable. In the long run I want to switch to the Wisp but am still using the Comfort Gel nasal atm.
Machine: Philips Respironics BiPAP C Series.
Mask: Respironics Comfort Gel Nasal Mask.

Pressure 12-18.

The first thing to check is whether the straps are too loose, too tight, or uneven. Also, the relative tightness of the upper and bottom straps can possibly be adjusted to fix this.

Barring this, there are some nasal masks that sit lower on you nose. For instance, the Mirage Vista Mask (shown below).

I’m not sure if this matters BUT, I use a Resmed AirTouch F20 Full Face Mask and I’m new to this whole OSA CPAP universe. I do a mask fit test each night before I start therapy and I consistently have no leaks, and especially no eye irritation due to leaks status post therapy. The problem could lie with the mask type. Good luck!

I think it is to do with my mask type.

As of now, I am wondering whether I have an eye infection as it is bothering me where it never did before, even though the leaks are obviously no worse than they always have been.

I presume leaks into the eyes can cause conjunctivitis? Could even be an infection. That eye has had surgery in the past so it is probably more sensitive s a result.

I use the mask that you use with no issues. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that it's the right mask for you.

Padacheek mask liner for my Simplus mask pretty much eliminates all leakage into my eyes. Probably works well for other masks too!

Google Quartz eye shields (or sleep mask etc). They make specific ones for Cpap use.

I would loosen any straps and start the fitting from the beginning. Then run the mask fit and adjust as needed until the leaking stops.
