Thank you for the replies.
I should have mentioned in my original post post that the humidifier tank had a bunch of mineral deposits on the sides and bottom.
I let it sit in 50% vinegar/water solution for a half hour, cleaned it up. Wasn't happy with how much deposits remained. So I created a solution of 50% lemon juice / water, let it sit for an hour. It came out sparking.
I always just use straight vinegar. I usually put a paper towel in to wick the vinegar up the sides, that way I only need a little.. and let it sit for a while (usually an few hours, cuz I get busy doing other stuff.
the lemon juice or citric acid thing works too.

I couldn't believe how much deposits were in it, I'm used to my own, where I use distilled water, top up for the week (sometimes 2) then wash it. Looked like the guy was using it to mix cement.
other countries, the manuals just say "use water" since distilled water is harder to get there.

I have thrown his filter out and placed a new, original filter (still in the packaging) in the carrying bag on the machine. I don't see the value of opening it considering it may be months and months before I use it.
I don't see any harm in putting the filter in, packaging or no, but if you choose not to do so, make sure you don't forget to put the filter in when you do go to use it.
I would advise using the new machine for a few days now, just to make sure it does work good, and there's no issues, you don't want to find a problem after you've gone on vacation.

Do you regularly switch them up to ensure they both are maintained and in good working order, or do you keep your spare packed up and untouched until needed?
I don't
A couple more questions for those of you who keep identical spares. If you keep them packed up, do you keep the Device and Humidifier in plastic bags similar to how it was shipped to prevent the seals and rubber from drying out?
[/quote]
The seals are silicone, there's nothing to dry out. There's no rubber in the device/hose/mask.
