Ooooh!
Something else to chew on!
My 8 YO grandson turned his football mouth guard into a chew toy.
It looked like the dog had found it!

I remember a story about someone who vomited while keeping their mouth shut. He died. The safety aspect is troublesome, at least to me. I would love a solution like this though, so I could move from a FFM to nasal mask—but, I don't know if I think it's worth the risk, no matter how infinitesimally small it might be.

Better quit living in a house or apartment.
In the home: 20,000 deaths, 7 million disabling injuries, and 20 million hospital trips in the U.S. each year.

When I was experimenting with the DW Nasal & pillow masks I kept experiencing tape failure for a myriad of reasons with everything including 3M plastic, paper, cloth, surgical, microbial and even duct & shipping tape. Went to my off-premise storage unit and snagged my silicone Mares JAX snorkel/regulator mouthpiece off my equipment. Was comfy and fit perfectly and custom fitted to my molars due to boiling in water. Was easily the most comfy when compared to all the tapes I personally tried. Easily the biggest success I was able to achieve keeping my mouth sealed although knowing what I do today I might go back to the scuba store and find a slightly thinner/narrower profile mouthpiece that was moldable to my molars and possibly shorten the 'bitable' length as it may just start to push the gag reflex in some people tho my spendy Mares could be cut down for sleep rather than diving if I chose.

PS; it came with a plug to keep dust and/or critters out during storage which is what I used for sealing it during sleep testing.

Of course the big caveat; this is N-O-T medical advice or even a recommendation for anyone beyond the tip of MY nose along with the venerable YMMV!!!

ok. You think this is a lie?

Had a friend many years ago that taped his mouth shut and vomited, inhaling same. He died. Personally I would use a full face mask to offset mouth breathing although I am not sure exactly how much safer it is in empirical terms. I use the Quattro FFM and love it. I also have several different kinds of tape, a PAPCAP and other assorted contraptions intended to keep my mouth sealed while sleeping. They were all a pain in the butt to use. The Quattro is, in and of itself, a great solution to the problem and is especially useful if you have allergies or a cold (love my humidifier for when I have a cold... heated high humidity air... great for a cold. No coughing. Clear chest in the morning. Etc.
Whatever you say.

Ultimately, I would like to tape my mouth shut so I can avoid the problems associated with a FFM. If the global consensus is that it's safe, then, hell, I'd do it.

That looks like just a flat piece of plastic or whatever it is made from based on the web site picture:

I would be afraid of swallowing it. Looks like you could make one for free

Before I started using a Sunci, I toyed with the idea of making a similar device. Even talked with my dentist about it. Never got far with it, though, too many obstacles to overcome. Now, after a couple of years of use, the Scunci has proven very effective in reducing my mouth breathing to an acceptable level.

As always, those with a hair-trigger gag reflex should avoid putting anything unfamiliar into the mouth.
Intravenous feeding, anyone?

hmmmm....for awhile, i was using something similar. on the baby wipes i buy, there is an oval piece of plastic that you pierce (it's perforated.) and then you remove to access said wipes. it has a hinged plastic lid to keep the wipes moist.

anyway, i put that piece of plastic pretty much how it's pictured in the drawing. however, i used this in conjunction with the scunci hairbands that jay mentions here. so i didn't have much danger of swallowing it as the band plus cervical collar kept my mouth closed.

the reason i was using it was i had a very slight gap between my teeth where my bottom lip would come through. in the end it didn't work and since i've learned to adjust the scuncis.

by itself? i would think i'd end up swallowing it.
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

Based on the posting history of the person who said that? yes. I think it was a lie.

i am always happy to let people know that this works! well, at least for me. no danger of swallowing it. no danger of choking on vomit as it is easily removed.

the scunci itself can be popped into the washer and dryer to give it longer life. i've never really noticed how long i can make them last. whenever they start to really let go, i just go buy them new.

good stuff!

Chin up strips instead of tape.
Made for cpap users.
I made my own for a while.

I've been looking at taping and chin up strips came up. What are your impressions?
