can i order a mask without a prescription?

Post by zackds » Wed Jun 13, 2018 9:50 am

i am self diagnosed right now with sleep apnea. due to losing my job i dont have money for a cpap. i have someone who may be giving me a machine in the next few days. im not sure what the machine is but i think it is auto. it is just an old cpap the guy has he said he would let me have. my question is, where is the best place to order a mask for it? and do i need a prescription to order one?

Amazon won't require a RX but most of the other places online will.

Before spending money though...tell me what you want to try and I might have something in the donations box.
I have a couple of big boxes of unwanted cpap stuff that people donate so it just doesn't end up in the trash.
Some stuff is new...some used just a little bit but not hurt. Soap and water is all you need to clean things up unless you have a serious problem with germs.

Can you normally breathe through your nose just fine or do you have chronic nasal congestion issues where you can't breathe through your nose comfortably?

Occasional stuffy nose no big deal but if you have really bad congestion and just have to breath through you mouth then you probably should go with full face mask.
Otherwise if the nose is okay I would suggest start with the least obtrusive mask.
I need to look to see what I have. Not much in full face but a couple of nasal masks of some sort. Maybe even a nasal pillow mask.
I don't remember off hand and need to look.

Used masks was how I funded all my mask experiments when I was first starting therapy. No way could I afford new and my insurance only bought one mask every 6 months.

You can't order a mask without a prescription from any legit place... but you can find them on amazon sometimes (usually for really good prices) and you can order all the parts to assemble your own mask off amazon, ebay, or any online supplier.

Strangely, mask *parts* don't require a prescription, but whole masks do.

I guess that's the weird kind of 'government' logic that results in situations here where a hamburger is taxed, but a pound of hamburger meat isn't. something about 'ready to eat' is taxed, but ingredients aren't.

Depends on the mask. Some have several parts and some might have just 3 parts.
I don't advise you going the parts route until you know which masks or what and which parts are needed.
You might end up spending more money and still maybe missing a part.

Once you get an idea what you want to use then you can shop for parts and save money because often there is only one part of it that will need replacing very often.

Let me see what I have that you can have for free. Get you started so that you can learn what all this stuff is about and maybe figure out your own preferences and go from there. Gotta start somewhere. Someone just sent me a box of stuff the other day and I just haven't had a chance to sort through it yet.

We probably should find you a new hose also...I think I probably have a regular non heated hose that is new or near new that will work with any machine. If your friend finds his machine there's no telling what shape the hose will be after all this time anyway.

I have a slimline non heated hose and a Resmed Airsense 10 climate line heated hose -both used- but perfectly fine, and some filters for it I can pitch in for you if that helps- when you find out what machine it is.

I got hoses...I found a box I forgot I had and there was a bag full of hoses in it.
I will make sure there is a hose in with the mask(s).
So no need for anyone else to send a hose unless you just want it out of your house.
I am pretty much out of spare filters with the exception of some big monsters for an older machine of some sort. Legacy series I think.
So once he gets the machine maybe someone could help with filters unless it happens to be a machine that goes with the big monster filters I have.

I am in the middle of very late spring cleaning...the whole house. So I have things scattered everywhere..but by this evening I will know which masks I can send.
Right now I am cleaning because tomorrow the person to help me do the hard work cleaning is coming. You know how it goes...can't let the cleaning lady see what a mess I have.

My daughter and grandson are coming at the end of the month...so I am in super cleaning mode.

Where are you located?

In Canada, a prescription is NOT required for CPAP masks.

I have the ResMed AirFit P10 nasal pillow mask to send to you. Headgear and frame used but the nasal pillow is new. Just out of the bag because it came in a box with 3 sizes. No big deal. I am sending Medium and Large pillows to try unless you tell me you have a peanut nose. These run on the small side of things. I use a small and I am not a very big person. If you have a small nose and peanut nostrils...let me know and I will go find a small and XSmall.

If you want to see it there's a link in my equipment profile below...it's the mask that I am using.
About as nothing of a mask as there is and the venting is essentially silent.
I have a non heated white 22 mm hose also. The white ones are a little more flexible and of better quality than the gray ones.
It will work with any machine and any mask.

At your convenience send me a private message with your name and mailing address. I will be using the USPS.
Probably will be Friday before I can get to town and get to the post office. I have someone coming here to the house tomorrow to help me do some major cleaning and we might not be done before the post office closes.

Still looking in the boxes of stuff and if I find anything else that looks interesting I will include it.
The P10 is probably the best of what I have though...but then I am prejudiced. Some of the stuff I have isn't a complete mask...and those won't do you any good so I have to make sure I have all the pieces.
