Sleeping pills

Post by Chalkie » Wed Jun 06, 2018 10:09 am

I know it's not a great idea to mix sleeping pills and PAP and I can see why. Last night I took one for the first time in nearly a year and awoke at 5 am with what I guess had been a bad apnea/desat - short of breath and very weak pulse for a while. Scary. I just feel that at 51 my heart muscle is not getting any stronger, although I had a thorough checkup recently and got the all clear. I feel I am not able to get away with sleep meds as easily as I did though.

The hard part now is not worrying about another sleepless night - ordinarily, it would not be such a disaste but I am planning a weekend away and dread the thoughy of not sleeping either there, or even worse, before I go.

Do others resort to sleep meds or do you tough it out, even at the cost of a sleepless night?

My family doctor, who prescribed APAP for me, told me that it's OK to take an over the counter sleep aid if needed. I did this on a regular basis while getting use to APAP. Now, I take a magnesium supplement, which helps me sleep through the night. With the start of summer where I live, and allergy season, I also take a benedryl at night.

I was reading a brochure in my doctor's office about Ambien. It listed one of the side effects as possibly having sex in my sleep without knowing or remembering. I like to know and remember when that happens. :D

Best just disconnect your computer. When my sister was on Ambien, she would go online and buy stuff. And then be really, really surprised when things were delivered. :D

I started APAP 2 days ago and have had no luck getting to sleep with the mask on yet, so tonight I'm trying some Nytol to see if that helps, along with some ear plugs to try and block out the noise of the machine itself. Hoping it'll help. (UARS mind not OSA)

Didn't Rosanne blame Ambien?

I take 500 mg. of magnesium and 3 mg. of melatonin. Works great for me.

IIRC you need to be careful with Melatonin, only a short term intervention.. I think it can mess with the bodies natural production of melatonin if used over a long period, creating a dependancy on it. Might be worth looking into just incase!

Better Living with Chemistry, not always a good idea. Wife uses Ambien, (Poison), I cut dose in half, still wanders out of her mind, has no idea of what she is doing.

One night at 4 a.m., I heard the front door open, got up found the wife outside waiting in the dark for her sister to take her to sunday church with her sister, only problem, IT WAS WEDNESDAY! You can't reason, with anyone on it, they are like your worst drunk. It is addictive, she's hooked on it. It's terrible, would love to get her off it but she's hooked!

It's terrible turning control of your mind to drugs, it's your mind that keeps you safe from being stupid. What if there was a fire, or other emergency, without being able to think correctly, natural selection takes over. Jim

When I have trouble sleeping, I KNOW the reason. ANXIETY.
Half a .5 mg alprazolam does the job--almost too well.
The Rx only has 10 pills, but i only need it filled once a year.
