Another newbie about to have my first night with CPAP

Post by Reninga » Wed May 30, 2018 9:03 pm

Hi all! Newbie here recently diagnosed with OSA. I did a home study as I have a ten month old little girl and I was told I had Mild to moderate. I have a Resmed Airsense 10 autoset for her and I have a airfit p10 mask with the medium pillow currently. I put it on about twenty minutes ago so I would have some time to just wear it before falling asleep. I can already tell this is going to need some getting used to as I almost feel like I'm suffocating which I've read is totally normal. I honestly am crushed I'm at this point that I'm having to use a CPAP but I've already lost 40lbs since the birth of my daughter (only gained 23 during pregnancy) and my goal is about 100 more... Any other questions or comments please feel free to post. I'm excited about joining this great looking community for support.

What is your starting pressure? Are you using the ramp.
If the starting pressure is less than 6 or if using ramp when it starts at 4 cm a lot of people feel like they are suffocating. There's just not enough air moving for comfort.

Also with the nasal pillow masks...sometimes the next size up allows for more air movement.
I would look at starting pressure first since you are already using the medium pillow.

Welcome to the forum.

If unsure about starting pressures you can go into the clinical setup menu and look to see if ramp is turned on and/or what the starting minimum pressure might be.
If you don't know how to get to the setup menu this manual explains how.

They have me starting at 4.. I wanted to start with the small pillows but the lady who showed me the device told to me use the medium ones.

Here is my first night on the CPAP.. unfortunately I woke up to not only go to the bathroom twice but my ten month old is also dealing with a double ear infection and sleep regression so I woke up a few times..

Welcome to CPAPTalk!

You obviously have a ResMed machine. Please fill out your Equipment Profile here (preferably in text) so we can better assist you.

https://www.cpaptalk.com/ucp.php?i=ucp_ ... pment_info

Some machines have more data available that can be accessed with other free software.

Your first night looks promising with 0.0 AHI.

I would not worry about the number of mask on/off. For compliance only number of hours and perhaps AHI (events per hour) are considered.

Done! Thank you. How long does it take for you to actually catch up on rest and feel rested once you start cpap therapy?

Thank you.

You have a full data machine like mine. Many of us use the free SleepyHead software reading data from the machine's SD card to better evaluate our CPAP therapy. People here sometimes post graphs from that software to get help.

The current released version is at https://sleepyhead.jedimark.net/

So many aspects of CPAP therapy are personal per user. Many of us has some mild nasal discomfort with the P10 pillows until our bodies adapted. That usually goes away in a short time. In my case, I switched to a different mask and then went back to the P10 with no discomfort so I cannot say how long discomfort lasts.

Everybody recovers at a different pace. Within the first week, I started feeling more rested. But for the next 6 months, I continued to feel better. My sleep Dr. said it takes 6 months for the brain to recover. Just don't get discouraged and keep up with it.

Please don't feel bad that you are using a CPAP. It isn't a comment on your weight; it has to do with the structure of your throat. Lots of skinny folks use CPAP machines. Be kind to yourself.

My hat is off to you. We all have an adjustment period getting used to the machine and finding the right mask. And you are doing it with a sick kiddo!

Just remember there are plenty of folks here to help you through your journey.

So just to keep everyone updated... It's still been a rough few days.. my daughter had a reaction to her second antibiotic last night and woke up screaming with hives at 1am.. so once we finally got her calmed down we watched trolls for awhile. The last three nights I've had 0.1AHI, 0.3AHI, and 0.2AHI respectively. I for sure feel more clear headed during the day and not needing a nap like I usually do. I did call and order the other nose mask today as the pillows are giving me sores on my nostrils... I'm still using the medium. I wonder if I should try the small tonight.

Good morning. Your AHI numbers are great! However, if you're getting sores, your pillows are the wrong size. I was lucky enough to get all three pillow sizes with my Nuance Pro mask; I ended up going larger. They rest on the outside of your nose holes, not the inside. Any P10 users out there that can confirm this?

From someone who is a few weeks ahead of you, I was having soreness in and around my nostrils and was about to try a different mask. I decided to push through it and now I don't get any soreness at all.

We love Trolls at our house, too. It's not on heavy rotation any more. My youngest is 6. She's watching Coco over and over now. I remember for a long time when she would wake up regularly at night, Finding Nemo was her go-to.

IT is quite common to have some tenderness at first with P10. In my case, I had some tenderness and then tried other masks. I returned to the P10 a few weeks later and no soreness. Always used the Medium pillow too, so size was not the issue.

Thanks for the advice everyone.. the left nostril it's just red but the right one actually has a little sore on it which I noticed this morning from a bit of blood on my nostril. I'm going to try and push through but thankfully they are going to send me the other one as well so I can switch between the two. Thankfully my insurance is covering all of this and our deductible is met from my daughter..
