CPAP versus AutoPAP: are there really advantages to each?
Re: CPAP versus AutoPAP: are there really advantages to each?
We all have our medical issues here.
Being touchy and easily offended can be part of a medical issue.
So can having difficulties maintaining calm.
All in all, we are a lot of imperfect people here doing our best to be part of something helpful to people who need help. It can be messy; we can all improve in the examples we set. But this place sure ends up with a lot of great information in an entertaining package when taken as a whole, I think.

Why, pure passive-aggressive trolling, of course. Couldn't you tell?

Troll, hmm.
Should I comb your mohawk and tickle your fat little tummy?
Because that is the kind of troll I imagine, jeff.

In the fuss over jbstarks3 comments, let's not lose track of JerryL. He only came here questioning to learn. He posed reasonable questions. He had an open mind. He was not proposing that APAPs have no advantages over CPAPs.
Here are some quotes from his posts.

JerryL's critical, skeptical, researching and questioning approach and willingness to learn make him a candidate for a good long-term member here.JerryL wrote: ↑Mon May 14, 2018 3:17 pm
CPAP versus AutoPAP: are there really advantages to each?
But are there any actual medical reasons to prefer CPAP? Or is AutoPAP always better?
It has tons of strong pro-AutoPAP arguments: my ideal pressure may change during the night (could it vary depending on my sleep position?), it might change over time as I acclimate to PAP, it might change over time as I get older or my weight changes.
I'm wondering: Assuming my doctor is willing to prescribe a CPAP machine that provides good data, should I try to persuade him to instead prescribe an AutoPAP machine?
But if OSA can change during REM sleep, then I wonder if their results were valid -- because the 9cm pressure was never actually tested during REM sleep!

From where I sit, the most valuable service we can perform for the likes of JerryL is to take the time vigorously to debunk any misleading information, such as that posted by jbstarks3, that happens to get posted in answer to JerryL's queries in this thread. Re: CPAP versus AutoPAP: are there really advantages to each?
You are assuming, and trusting, that the machine is able to accurately detect a respiratory event. The compliance failure rate for patients with moderate to severe OSA on autoPAP is higher than those with a prescribed pressure. There is a place and a patient population for the use of autoPAP, but as the population ages, and the number of patients with comorbids increases, the need for a prescribed CPAP and bilevel pressure(s) with proper PAP education will increase.palerider wrote: ↑Tue May 15, 2018 2:31 pmYou're quite wrong about your assumptions.
Pressure needs change *during the night* for most people. The "right pressure" for nrem sleep is very often lower than the "right pressure" for rem sleep. The "right pressure" for side or stomach sleeping is usually lower than the "right pressure" for back sleeping.
Re: CPAP versus AutoPAP: are there really advantages to each?
Yes. Most here assume that science is valid. If you believe you have proof that science is broken, please post that, but preferably somewhere other than this forum. Thanks.
Actually, the failure rate for posters who make things up like you just made up is quite high. I mean, nice trolling attempt, sure, but what you post should at least sound like it could be true to someone somewhere.
Yes. That place is called "Planet Earth." And that patient population is called "everyone with OSA," except those with contraindications for auto-titrating machines. Your homework is now to go find an authoritative source that lists the contraindications. You have 24-hours. Or your posts will self-destruct.
My opinion is that proper PAP education should begin by ignoring your posts.
I generally only engage with trolls a few times, and then even I stop.
Good day to you, sir.

And, there we have it, the smoking gun.
Some ignorant know it all from the medical 'community'.
