Question about AHI
I have a question about how to read the AHI number. I'm very bad at math so if this is a Duh kind of question please forgive me. We will use my initial AHI from my Sleep study as example. 107.8. I know that means I had 107 apnea episodes an hour but what i can't figure out is what is the .8 part about. I keep having good numbers like 0.4 and 0.9 etc for my readings ever since I even had a night where it was a 0, I just don't understand how you can have 0.5 or half an apnea episode.
Can someone explain it in laymans terms for me as if I was a grade school student.
Thank you very much
Faeth

Re: Question about AHI
This is an average that represents the combined number of apneas and hypopneas that occur per hour of sleep.
So say that you slept 8 hours with a total number of 28 apneas and hypopneas. When you divide 28 events by 8 hours you get an AHI of 3.5

Re: Question about AHI
AHI represents the total number of apnea events divided by the number of hours you are hooked up to your CPAP machine.
For example, if you have 4 apnea events during an 8 hour session, your AHI would be
4 divided by 8 which equals. .5
So your AHI = .5
In other words, AHI is not each hour, but the average over the sleep session.

Re: Question about AHI
Only the good Lord knows how long I thought as you did.... how can you have a half a event?.... you either had one or you didn't! If your total number of events are less than the total number of hours slept, then you will get an AHI result that is a fraction.

It is math.
You need not understand it to know it works.
Just observe.

Is that what you do, Just observe ?chunkyfrog wrote: ↑Mon May 14, 2018 4:50 amIt is math.

I am trying... , just not working.

How about having an AHI < 1 ?

My artificial intelligence is maybe corrupted.

Re: Question about AHI
There is reality. And then there are the various imperfect languages used to describe reality.
Math is a language. Do not let the nature of the constructs of a language distract from the nature of nature itself.
A written summary of a book is useful, but it isn't the book. AHI is useful, but it doesn't tell the whole story.
The answer to the question "What happened last night?" is more useful when it is brief. Thus the value of reporting one number to sum up the night.
I am 51.7% certain that I just gave an answer that is somewhat relevant to the question asked.

Re: Question about AHI
Less than 1 AHI is very good. -- wonderful,
It represents an AVERAGE of under 1 event an hour.
You are in Norway, right?
And using a language converter, I gather.
