did someone ask about old school CPAP devieces?

Post by chartle » Tue May 01, 2018 9:16 am

My Sleep Dr's Office is in the Lung Center of the major Medical provider in Pittsburgh. If you live with in 100 miles of Pittsburgh you know the name UPMC.

I was at my 90 day compliance appt with my sleep Dr at one building on the Oakland Campus and afterwards I walked over to my wife's building, she works for the Univ of Pittsburgh the UP of UPMC, to get her so we could get my car since I was using her parking pass.

In the lobby of the her building, the Graduate School of Public Health, was this, about as old school as you can get. And yes i know it was mostly used to replace a ventilator but I found this article and it says one of the last people using one only really uses it at night.

The newest inspection sticker has a date of 2001 and the "Do Not Touch" label was from when it was still being used. The electrical box looks new and there was even a spare drive belt with it from NAPA.

No, they didn't ask. A Iron lung isn't used for XPAP, it a old school ventilator, meant for lungs that don't pump air. Newser, is a pretty low grade mag. Jim

You seem to have confused 'deep sea diving' with 'mechanical ventilation' with 'cpap'. All completely different things.

Jim's right.

I am not aware of anybody ever being treated for Sleep Apnea with one of these devices. I also don't know if it could be useful for Sleep Apnea. More to the point, Sleep Apnea was not identified as a medical condition until the 1970s.

The first CPAP machine was used in 1979 (or maybe 1980) in Australia. It was so large and so noisy, that it was kept in a room separate from where the patient slept and connected by a very long hose.

I suppose one could have someone drive their car all night, and the patient could roll the right front window, stick their head out, have the driver tape the patient's head out the window like a dog. (Tape the mouth shut, to keep the drool off the side of the car.). Then drive as the speed necessary to keep the patient's airway open when they sleep.

Only problem, who's going to keep the driver awake. Can't find a friend to drive, call Uber! Jim

If one knew to do this, it could have been done with an aquarium pump and an improvised mask.

I remember the polio epidemic was still scaring the bejeebers out of parents when I was a kid.
My mother made sure my brother and I got the Salk vaccine as early as humanly possible.
We got free shots during one of the early test runs.
Dr Salk was a gift from God for so many families--too late for so many others.
Knowing what we know about polio, it is an outrage that SOME people oppose vaccine at all.
((( frog rant--no excuse)))

No, not enough airflow.

It's been 12 years since I worked at IU hospital. They still had a working one when I left. We would get it out for every once in a while and wheel it over to the hotel for a Big Wig to use when he visited.
