Another Newbie w/questions about masks

Post by dwbeagle » Tue Oct 31, 2006 6:52 am

Good Morning, I have been trying this for about four months now! Here are some thought/issues I would like to discuss.

First the equipment: I have an S8 Resmed w/humidifier and a Pay-Kel nasal gel mask. The machine has a 10 minute ramp to 7 (whatever the measurement is), anyway it goes to seven at full ramp.

I do not have any problem getting to sleep with it now. Initially though I had a lot of apprehensions about what happens when the power goes out etc. etc. Also, not the most comfortable thing to have stuck on your face.

I move a LOT when I sleep. I have not gotten what I would call a good night's sleep yet. I have been sleeping in my recliner mostly since I realized that it was almost impossible to sleep lying down. Between the weight of the mask and the hose it seems to pull the mask loose when I lay down.

Whenever I lay down in bed I find that the mask leaks when I move. This wakes me up and I need to reseat the mask and try to fall back to sleep. Also the leak almost invariably leaks around my eyes and I don't really need pink eye on top of this. What I find is happening to me is that when I move the the headgear straps slide up on my head and the mask loosens up. I use a chin strap and have tried to incorporate this with the headgear but without success so far. Also, I have what would be called a FULL face with a mustache so not sure about how it seal properly.

I can get a full night with the mask on in the recliner so that is working ok. I find that this prevents me from moving my head and hence fewer leaks. However I really don't think you get the rest you require in that position.

What I basically need I guess is suggestions about mask for those of you that do move around a lot when you sleep. I was able to try the Comfortlite (not the 2) but the hard plastic headgear was uncomfortable. Maybe I will try the Comfortlite 2. Any ideas on this one?

Sorry to be so long winded about this but I am leaning toward just giving up.

I've used the CL2, off and on, since may 2006. It's a very good mask for side sleeping. Furthermore, there are several tricks to make the nasal pillows fit better.

Hi, that is a very interesting set up. You use this to keep the pillow tight to your face? I actually think that I would prefer the simple pillow vs. the nasal set up. I have a relatively small (pug if you like) nose and really think the simple pillow would work better for me.

How about the headgear. Have you noticed that it ever rides up when moving around? I think after looking at it again that creating something and incorporating the chin strap may keep this one in place.

I would think that these manufacturers must read these forums to get ideas of some of the problems real people are having.

I think the CL2 fix above is used to adjust the angle and/or distance beween the pillows.

As for headgear riding up the back of the head ... some suggest using the "hook" side of velcro strip to the back strap of the headgear ... although it will get tangled up in long hair ... but then you can ommit the velcro and just tie the hair up into a pony tail and tuck the back strap under it.
