Mask leak problem

Post by CiMi » Sat Mar 24, 2018 10:52 am

I have an AirFit 20 mask and the silicone makes red spots on my face wherever it touches my skin. I bought some cloth liners that work great but every time I use them the score on MyAir goes down due to numerous mask leaks.

That leaves me two options:

Wear the liner, get a good night's sleep and no red marks on my face
or
Be miserable with the itching from the silicone, have red marks on my face but have a great MyAir score

Any suggestions?

Use available software to evaluate just how bad those leaks are when using the mask liner
If they aren't horribly horrible I think I would opt for good sleep and no itching and no red marks.
It all depends on just how bad those leaks are.

If you need help evaluating the leak graphs post a picture of the detailed report and we can help.
See this thread for how to share the images and what we need to see.

The AirTouch F20 cushion also fits the AirFIt headgear. It is made out of a foam material ("Ultrasoft memory foam is produced with an open cell polyurethane material") which may help too. Just be aware of the no soap and water cleaning rule (gently use CPAP wipes.) No SoClean machine use either.

Replace the cushion every 30 days.

What about a different mask?

About two years back Resmed replaced my CPAP machine to an AirSense 10 from a REMstar M and a comfortable night has not been had since.
The AirSense 10 is not as quiet.
The humidifier runs out of water after 7 hours of use.
Neither of the masks I've tried eliminate leakage.
The air flow is too weak to assist in keeping me from mouth breathing.

Of course I've informed ALL concerned -- including RESMed and my sleep technician/doctor. RESMed sent me a note telling me to talk with the doctor. The doctor tells me to shave (I have a full face beard which dates back to the day I left the Marine Corps - 50 + years which was not a problem with REMStar M -- no discomfort and no leakage and no water shortage). I rate the AirSense 10 one star -- zero stars if possible. I rate RESMed as a company whose products should be avoided at all costs because of their not showing any concern for customers's concerns.

Now for the "experts": The settings for the humidifier have been adjusted and are currently at 4. The "air" pressure has been set by RESMed -- I don't know what its setting is but did have the doctor "prescribe an adjustment for same. I have tried two masks with NO improvement. I have been wearing a chinstrap which helps a little bit.

What causes the problems? Mask leakage, in my opinion, is a direct result of the removing the blue molding material. Mouth breathing; a reduction in the quantity of air flow (with the "old" machine I had difficulty speaking when the machine was on and the mask fit properly). Water shortage is simply caused by an inadequately sized reservoir. (When the water runs out the air develops a stink of heated plastic .)

I am at a loss for a next step. I've changed doctors (both are sleep experts -- whatever that means). And I've attempted to work with RESMed with absolutely NO ASSISTANCE being offered.

Start your own thread if you want help on this, it may not be seen here. There is a lot you can do, starting with realizing there are more than 2 masks in the world (you may have to try many before you find the right one) and you can look at your own data to see why it may not be working as well for you as your old machine (we can help).
