lower events per hour with airstart than airsense?

I'm getting lower events per hour (displayed on the sleep report screen)with the airstart apap machine than with my airsense 10 autoset apap Machine. This test has been over a few days on each and then switching each night back and forth.


Do they use the same algorithm or are they different? is the airsense calculating something different?

the same mask and hose are used thinline and Quattro air.

my assumption would be that I would be getting a better sleep on the airsense machine which is why I bought it. I have them on the same settings, the airstart shows 1.8 events per hour on average and the airsense shows between 5-6 on average.

I've even tried the "soft" setting on the airsense as a test and it's actually worse.

a little background

I am not new to machines I've been using one since 2012. After months of fiddling around with pressures I get the best when apap is set between for between 9 and 9.6 with an epr of 3. Six months ago and earlier going back to 2012 I was on S9 ASV epap of 6 preassure support 3 AHI of 0!

I know now that i really didn't need the ASV since the support was only three and my centrals are minimal (but I do have some). I just couldn't really sleep on pressure of cpap and rather than go to apap the asv is what the doctor gave me he said its the Cadillac of cpap and anyone on it does great why bother trying each type and he had me use it during a sleep study and I had 0 events with it. It was incredibly expensive and it makes me have massive amounts of bloat and Air in the morning and I was getting earpain from excess preassure unable to have it be less then 14 max preassure on this machine (8 preassure support minimum) , which is why I switched to the APAP. I felt like crap constantly with sinus and ear infections on the asv constantly I'm much better on apap. the asv s9 that I have is not the asv with auto asv (surprise the dme was playing games).

the events per hour screen on the airsense shows up in sleepyhead as about the same number for my AHI. As we all know the airstart is a brick and I can't look at it and sleepyhead so all I can rely on is that sleep report screen.

the crazy part is I do think I actually feel a little better when using the airstart I'm really hoping it's not because subconsciously I'm harping on the numbers. the machine was so cheap I had bought it for travel.

Can you share exactly what the data is you are getting off the AirStart machine and what you are getting off the AirSense 10 machine?
I assume these are off the LCD screen or are you using software?

I believe it is a different algorithm since it doesn't do central apnea event detection.

ahhh. so its not calculating the centrals at all then. do you think it's actually a different algorithm entirely rather than just detection? my understanding is it doesn't do anything for central anyway.

I have no idea what or why it is doing. I was under the impression that the AirStart machines only report hours of use.
That's why I asked what you were seeing being reported on the machine's LCD menu.

If it doesn't detect centrals...then it must be a different algorithm because the other algorithm detects centrals...even if it can't do anything about them.

It has Essentials Plus just like the airsense so you can see the same events per hour number you would on the airsense under sleep report screen.

If it doesn't detect centrals then it can't be the same thing as I get under Essentials Plus with my AirSense AutoSet.
If it doesn't detect centrals then it can't report centrals.

Is it possible that your AirStart's lower AHI is because it is missing centrals?

Can you give me the AHI from the AirStart and the event category breakdown shown on the LCD screen and then the same from your AirSense machine?

You are of course aware that we don't sleep the same each night anyway and it's possible to have variations in the AHI even without changing machines, settings, masks or anything???

Given that the chart you posted shows that the AutoSet 10 (not For Her) does not report RERAs, what does it report that shows up in SH as RERAs? See following:

I think that was just an old chart.
The first AirSense 10 AutoSets didn't report RERAs but the for her model did but I think Resmed changed it and now they do.
I got that chart off a ResMed website page talking about only the AirStart model. I guess ResMed didn't update all their web pages.
