Surgical tape is meant to be rather sticky and hold very well, perhaps something non-surgical would be better.

3m makes a plethora of various medical tapes with varying grades and types of adhesives, "3M Kind Removal Silicone Tape" is supposed to be their gentlest.

Wear one vertically under the chin and one horizontally across the mouth.
I haven't tried it, but I think I would cut a short slit from the top down of the vertical one to keep it centered on the crown of the head.

Hey guys,

Thought you all might be interested in my final solution.

I had tried the headband thing, and found that the ones I could buy were not tight or wide enough. So I sacrificed an old pair of Spanx leggings, cutting a section out of the leg that was tighter and wider. This worked OK, but it left big dents in my face where the edges of the Spanx strip dug in. I use a chin strap, and it has also always left dents, which I'd been just sort of living with. A couple of nights ago it struck me, thinking about that crazy full face "beauty mask" thing, that I could make my OWN full-face mask with the leggings -- I just had to cut a wider section out of the leg (like, the length of my head), make a hole for my nose (I use a Pilario mask) and eyes, and slip the thing on over my head. I tried this a few days ago and IT WORKS. I had to experiment a bit, and ultimately decided against eye holes for various reasons -- but it keeps my lips closed, and since it covers my whole face and part of my neck, it cushions my chin strap and prevent dents from it, and I have NO dents from the mask since there's no edge to dig into my face anywhere. As a bonus, without the eye holes it does double duty as a sleep mask, and it sort of lightly compresses my entire face, so I wake up with nice, smooth, wrinkle-free skin.

If you're claustrophobic at all, this will NOT work for you, and I doubt it would work with masks that seal anywhere but directly in the nostrils. I also imagine I'm going to have to crank up the A/C in the summer to counteract basically wearing a head wrap to bed, but -- current problem(s) solved! Thanks to everyone who contributed to the discussion

Ya know, I kinda thought that something like this "beauty mask" thing showed some promise as an underlayment for cpap masks and for reducing mouth leaks. Made from the right material, it might even work with FFMs.

Good job on the leggings hack. Is there a picture to follow?

For people with sensitive skin who used TENS electrodes there are Skin Prep solutions that create a thin layer that prevents this from happening.

Try the skin prep liquids. I have rosacea (again ugh) and have found whenever a flare occurs (like your acne), I need an anti-inflammatory. I first switched to using Dove's coconut and jasmine bar soap (coconut is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal). I buy it on Amazon, 6 bars for ~$7. This works most of the time, when it doesn't I apply a very thin layer of a Cortisone cream (1%) with aloe.

...creases in my face when I wake up, and I'm at an age now where my skin doesn't just spring back into shape. Any Ladies of a Certain Age on here with ideas on how to deal with that?

Light massage over those creases and move the face muscles where they are to increase circulation. I get them now and then from strap marks even with microfleece covers.

I had problems with mouth breathing. I use a full face mask, but still got dry sore throat regularly. A cervical collar has worked for me.

Back when I was taping, a layer of lip balm (Chapstick or similar) on the fleshy part of the lips made removal in the morning easy and painless.
