Third Try Taping

Post by MaxINTJ » Sun Nov 26, 2017 10:23 am

Went and bought some expensive "wound covering" tape. It's very soft and pliable, water and sweat proof, and even supposed to stay on while swimming.

Put some on last night and was surprised it actually adhered. Laid down and it stayed in place and wasn't uncomfortable, so I was thinking maybe I finally have a solution!

Less than an hour later I woke up and the tape was 3/4 off. I went to put it back and it just fell off again.

Apparently the tape is not saliva proof. >.<

Back to square 1 unless there is a cure for drooling.

At least you don't have dry mouth. Much more damaging to your teeth. Jim

But either way I don't have therapy - which I'm sure is more damaging than a dry mouth.

The micropore tape from walllyword will stick despite saliva. Maybe it's called the gentle tape, but it has micropore written on the inside of the cardboard spool.

The durapore tape won't take the skin off your lips, so I use that as a layer of protection.

Is mouth taping bad? In a freak coincidence I wound up on an old smelly 737 and woke up the next day with what the good doc said looked like a fungal infection.....where the micropore tape took some skin off the lower
Iip may be permanently slightly marked, everything else cleared up immediately.

Just don't drive tired...now driving tired is really dangerous.

The micropore tape doesn't stick well enough to do anything

Any tape can be made more sticky by cleaning the skin first with an alcohol swab.
Beware--this might work better than you expect.

Yes, it may, and along with the drying of the skin, would be far too damaging to do every day.

I am having enough issues with trading one problem for another, I don't need to do more of it.

Not as much damage as a heart attack from sleep apnea, I have proof. Heck, I am Proof, Mine wasn't because of the CAN'T SYNDROME, It was the Didn't know I had Sleep Apnea Syndrome. Jim

I had the same issue with saliva when I first started taping. What worked for me was to purse my lips before applying the tape. This keeps the lips sealed and the saliva doesn't leak out and mess with the tape. It also keeps the adhesive off the tender skin of the lips.

I don't worry about it sticking to my lips as I use Chapstick before bed.

If you are putting the tape on the Chapstick, that might be your sticking problem. Putting the lips together like coconur suggests might keep the tape on dry skin. Also, a question that I haven't seen addressed. Do you have facial hair? Getting a mask seal and tape seal may be more of a problem if you do.

The Chapstick isn't where the tape needs to stick, and no, I am clean shaven.

All of the tapes that I tried, were easily undone by my slobbering. After a little googling of this site, I found the solution in some 2006-07 threads. I then added Poligrip Strips to my arsenal.

I cut a strip length-ways, and then cut one of those pieces in half, width-ways. Using both hands, one can force some curvature to those cut strips. I don't have a Julia Roberts sized mouth, so one and a half of the cut strips will do the job. You must pre-moisten the strips before applying to wet lips. There is an art for proper placement on the lips. Too far towards the teeth, then too much saliva and you will wake up with a sticky gooey mess on your front teeth. After you find the sweet spot, the Poligrip Strips form an effective dam to hold back slobber. I've been doing this for five years. The time required for my nighttime routine rivals that of my 15 y.o. granddaughter. But, adding the Poligrip Strips were the final piece for my success with xPAP.

In the morning as I remove the tape, I use a finger to move the Poligrip Strip from my lips to the tape. Again, some art involved to contain everything

Max, if you decide to try this, don't give up after two or three tries. Like I said, there is an art to finding the sweet spot. Good luck, Earl

Don't those stick too well? What if you got sick in the night? Very rare for me, but still a consideration.
