Am I the only one that has gained weight?
Am I the only one that has gained weight?
It seems that folks are losing weight after beginning xpap. For me it has been just the opposite. I have been using CPap for about a year now, and I have gained about 15 pounds. I was not overweight when I started treatment, something that caused a delay in a diagnosis. I am more active since beginning treatment, and I just don't understand why I am putting on weight.
Anybody else, or am I just the 'lucky' one?

You aren't the only one.
I had high hopes that I would get one of the benefits of weight loss with xpap. (looking for a miracle) Unfortuantly I haven't.
I feel better, I am more active. When I first started xpap I was just starting to play golf. I had a hard time finishing 9 holes. I noticed within the first week it became easier, and by end of summer I could do 9 easily. This year I started at eighteen and do it five days a week.
Although I am more active, I also eat more, and drink more, but I am enjoying life alot more. I may have put on a few pounds, I am obese, but carry it well.
It is such a joy to be able to do the things that you want to do. Enough said from me.

I think it is age, your metabolism slows down, you lose muscle mass, you don't stress out as much, things that all lessen the ole calorie burn rate.
Growing old sucks.
I gained nearly 40lbs., most I've weighed in my whole life, but then I quit smoking at the same time, so I attribute the weight gain to getting older and quitting smoking. Sure is harder to lose it than it is to gain it.

Well, it is nice to find out that I am not the only one, but I think it stinks!! I don't eat anymore than I did before, and am more active, and so I just couldn't understand why. Maybe you are right, Snoredog. I sure hope the weight doesn't keep increasing. I have never had a weight problem and I am not liking the extra pounds. It is great to have the extra energy, though.

Stunned
I was stunned when I gained 13 pounds in 2 WEEKS when I started CPAP!!
I was expecting to lose from what I had seen on the discussion groups.
I always did have to be different.

I've always been underweight....and different
I've gained 6lbs in the past 6 months - and that has me worried because it is unusual. I believe that most of it is water retention.
I don't like it one bit, and no one has any answers. So THAT's where the humidity has been going, eh?
...just because I'm not 'heavy' doesn't mean I have that ideal weight distribution though, so if it's not one thing...it's another!

How long?
Bamalady, I started on CPAP June 5 2006.
Before I started I was at 182 lbs. 2 weeks later I was at 195 with no change in diet!!!!!
I gradually took off a couple of pounds and got down to 192.
Now I'm starting on Nutrisystem to see if I can stand to eat that stuff.
Fortunately, the weight gain didn't continue. Just shot up then stayed there.
Why, I dunno.

Julie: That may be true, but some of us have had apnea for more than 20 years or longer.Julie wrote:I just think that OSA hits a lot of us at the same time as our bodies go into a different 'gear' and we gain wt. because of hormones, programming, etc. - NOT eating more isn't enough, we need to eat less, or differently, to stay in neutral.
Possibly the treatment we're now getting makes the difference?
